A burned-rock midden is an accumulation of burned limestone rocks. Surrounding the middens are often projectile points, stone tools, and other lithics. These mounds are commonly found in central Texas sites, and are "thought to be the result of intensive plant-processing activities" (Bement, 1994:1). The burned-rock midden shown below is covered in bluebonnets, about one-hundred feet from Hay Creek (shown on right). However, a burned rock from this particular mound is recognizable in the picture on the left.
