Introduction to Archaeology
Anthro 304 / ARY 301 Spring 1998
Prof. Samuel M. Wilson
Department of Anthropology, University of Texas
Midterm Review
Please review the following readings:
- Renfrew and Bahn: Introduction; 1, 2, 4, (7 is not part of this test)
- Whittaker, Hard Times at Lizard Man
- Flannery, The Golden Marshalltown.
- Hantman and Dunham, The Enlightened Archaeologist
- Fagan, Quest for the past
- Meltzer, Coming to America;
- Clottes, Rhinos and Lions and Bears
- You might also want to review the film Mysteries of Mankind. It is VIDCASS 1308 and is on reserve in the AV collection in the Undergrad library, 3rd floor. You can go there and watch it.
Pay particular attention to these topics or ideas:
- The history of archaeology since the rennaissance, with emphasis on the question of WHY people became so interested in understanding the past.
- The history of archaeology in the 20th Century: review our discussions of the various predominant interests -- culture history, lifeways, culture process, etc.
- Think, as most of you already have in your first essays, about what general observations you can make about archaeology on the web -- who are the authors, what kinds of traditional archaeological literature are included or omitted from the web.
- The "multiregional" and "out-of-Africa" hypotheses for the recent emergence of anatomically modern people.
