Course assignments:
- An in-class discussion and short written report of an archaeological project in the Caribbean. You will need to make a roughly 15 minute presentation on an archaeological project that has been carried out in the region. You should discuss what research questions were behind the research, what strategies were employed, and what their results were. It would be very good to have visual material - overheads, handouts, maps - to go with your presentation. These can also be part of your report, which should include about 5 double-spaced pages of text, a complete bibliography of the project, and other relevant material. This is due on Monday October 19th. The in-class presentations will occur from 28 Sept. to 12 Oct. [20%]
- A short research proposal, identifying a research problem and a strategy for its investigation. The proposal will be roughly in the format required by the NSF and other funding institutions - ten pages, with some fairly specific requirements about what has to be covered. Guidelines will be linked to our course web page. This proposal will be due on 9 November. [30%]
- A final project. You will discuss / present your project in class sometimes between the 9th and 30th of November, and the written version will be due Friday December 4th. There can be a lot of flexibility about this project, depending on where you are in your graduate program and what your interests are. I need to discuss this and receive a plan from you for your final project by October 26th. [30%]

I will put a packet of readings on the bookshelf in the mail room of the Anthro office. You may take the packet and photocopy it yourself, but please only take it for a few hours, so that others can have access to it.
