First Essay Assignment: Reburial / Repatriation
The essay assignment:
You have read two articles dealing with the issue of reburial. Additional readings are suggested at the end of this assignment. Please write an essay of five pages dealing with the matter of reburial. In this essay, I want you to try to present arguments both for and against the policy every reburying Native American skeletal remains. In recent weeks in this class we have discussed issues that had both "emotional" and "logical" or "reason-based" sides to them. The reburial issue is another one of these. Try to deal with both of these dimensions as well. Some notes on writing essays:
Everyone approaches to job of writing an essay in a slightly different way. It is never very successful, however, to just start in writing without a plan. Read over your papers and material, think about it, and make notes on some of the points you would like to make. Arrange these points in some order that would make sense to the reader. Then write a rough draft. One of the hardest parts of writing is picking up your rough draft and improving it. To do this, try to imagine yourself as the reader who has never seen the document before. Try to make sure that it flows from point to point smoothly. Finally, when you have it to about where you like it, spell- check and proofread it very carefully.Additional information about the issue of reburial can be found on-line here:
