Essay 2
This assignment is due Tuesday November 18thAs you now know, anthropology includes the subdisciplines of cultural or social anthropology, archaeology, linguistic anthropology, and physical anthropology. Adding to the complexity, each of these subdisciplines contains a variety of specialities. In your readings and in the material we've covered in class, you have seen some of the things anthropologists study, and some of the ways they go about it.
For this essay I want you to address the difficult question of anthropology's common ground -- what makes it all "anthropology?" In your answer please try to give some indication, drawn from your readings and our discussions, of what each of the subdisciplines do.
When you quote someone in your essay, or use an idea that you got from your reading, please include a citation to it. For example if you quote David Letterman, "Fall is my favorite season in Los Angeles, watching the birds change color and fall from the trees," you must cite him (Letterman 1995). For written works, such as Allman's "The Mother Tongue," give the page number of the citation, e.g. (Allman 1990: 60). At the end of the paper put a list of References Cited and include
Allman, William F.
1990 "The Mother Tongue." U.S. News and World Report. November 5, 1990, pp. 60-70.
