Graduate Field Course in Rainforest Research
(BIO384K)
Location and Habitats
The course will be based at Sirena Station (8°29'N and 83°36'W), Corcovado Park, Costa Rica. Corcovado occupies 54,039 ha on the Osa Peninsula. Sirena sits one kilometer from the Pacific Coast, and is surrounded by one of the best remaining tracts of lowland wet tropical forest in Central America. In addition to a variety of natural habitats such as rocky intertidal, estuaries, swamps, streams, and rainforest, there is also ready access to a variety of old field habitats dating from 1945-1976 and to areas undergoing continual disturbance either naturally along ridges and rivers or by the activities of park guards in keeping the airstrip clear and open.
