Procedure for Obtaining Export Permits
1. When you return to San José from the field, proceed immediately to the Museo Nacional or the collections at the University of Costa Rica. You will need to present your research permit (the Resolución provided by the Encargado de la Ventanilla Unica de Investigaciones) and the names and quantities of specimens to be exported. Personnel at these collections will provide a letter approving removal of the species for which they have adequate collections. They can also call for you to check that your information on the next office to visit is current (things occasionally change).
2. Take your permits, the letter from the Costa Rican museum person, and a completed Formulario de Exportación de Flora y Fauna to Javier Guevarra, Sr. Encargado, Ventanilla única de Investigaciones where Vida Silvestre is housed (as of April 2000). This is on Avenida 8/10, Calle 25 bis, (an old house behind a large church) one block east of the MINAE main office. He will prepare the necessary export permits.
On arrival in the US, present these Costa Rican documents, your USDA permits (in the case of live insects), and US Fish and Wildlife Service Form 3-177 (92K). Print and fill out the latter before going through US Customs.
