As the Spring 2008 semester wraps up at the University of Texas, five outstanding cadets in the Army R.O.T.C. program earn their commission as 2nd Lieutenants in the United States Army.

Military Ball

The Longhorn Battalion held its annual Military Ball on April 25th. The event was a chance for the cadets to socialize and formally recognize all the graduating seniors.

Thursday, 20 MAR 2008, the MS IV cadets arrived to their Military Science class earlier than usual. They loaded a van with three cadre members and made the short drive down Guadalupe to the State Capitol.

The normal planning process took place prior to this week's lab, but something slightly different happened when it was time to execute that plan. The MS IIIs stepped in front of the MS I and II cadets and started teaching.

Commanding General Visits UT

The Commanding General of Cadet Command, MG Winfield, met the Longhorn Battalion at the Combat Water Survival Test (CWST) on the morning of Wednesday, 19 MAR. He observed the last few cadets as they successfully completed the CWST, and then spoke briefly. He spoke about the MS IVs of the battalion who had a very high percentage of Excellence (E) evaluations when they attended Warrior Forge, a five-week summer course that assesses the cadets’ leadership potential and is a requirement for commissioning. He challenged the MS IIIs, who will be attending Warrior Forge, to live up to their predecessors’ example, and motivated the MS Is and IIs to continue on to meet the high expectations for cadets from the University of Texas.

The Longhorn Battalion woke up before the swim team on Wednesday, 19 MAR and opened the Texas Swim Center early so that they could perform their Combat Water Survival Test (CWST).

Cadets fire M16s at Camp Bullis, TX

The Weapons FTX, held on 15-16 February, was a great success! That Thursday, cadets learned the basics of rifle marksmanship at lab. This includes positioning, breathing, trigger squeeze, target acquisition, and aiming. Then, they were able to put these skills into action on Saturday.

Cadet Jamie Cruz is an MS III (third-year) cadet who is majoring in Nursing. She will attend LDAC this summer, where she will be able to utilize the knowledge gained from this and other labs to lead troops in simulated combat environments.

Cadets receive basic instruction on moving through the woods

Cadet Crystal Garcia is an MS III (third-year) cadet who will be going to LDAC this summer. LDAC is a five-week program that evaluates a cadet's ability to lead and perform certain soldiering tasks. She will be able to utilize the training from this week's lab in leading troops in simulated combat situations.

This Thursday, 17 JAN 2008, the Longhorn Battalion came together again after a long, relaxing break for all. The topic of lab this week was orientation for new cadets and MS I/II and the presentation of the COL Lawson W. Magruder, Jr. Award.

This past Saturday, 12 January 2008, the MS III and MS IV cadets ended their break early to learn more about fitness. Dutch Lowy, from Texas A/M Crossfit, traveled to Austin to teach us about a successful and healthy diet and a vigorous workout program that consistently produces results.
