Latin Teacher Certification in Texas

You must have a bachelor's degree (with a Latin Major) from an accredited college or university. Texas institutions do not offer a degree in education. Every teacher must have an academic major, as well as teacher training courses. For more information about a Latin major please stop by WAG 121 and speak with Candace Kash, the Undergraduate Academic Advisor.

You must complete teacher training through an approved program. The UTEACH program, offered through the College of Liberal Arts, is a teacher-training program especially suitable for UT students prior to their junior year. Post-baccalaureate certification is available through the College of Education or other off campus entities. (UTEACH is also available to juniors and seniors, it may require extra time to complete the program.)

You must successfully complete the appropriate teacher certification tests for the subject and grade level you wish to teach. Students are eligible to take the state certification examinations when they are in their last semester of coursework for their certification program, or after they have completed all coursework. The Department of Classics offers an ExCET Latin examination review each spring.
