Latin Teacher Certification in TexasYou must have a bachelor's degree (with a Latin Major) from an accredited college or university. Texas institutions do not offer a degree in education. Every teacher must have an academic major, as well as teacher training courses. For more information about a Latin major please stop by WAG 121 and speak with Candace Kash, the Undergraduate Academic Advisor. The UTEACH program, offered through the College of Liberal Arts, is a teacher-training program especially suitable for UT students prior to their junior year. Post-baccalaureate certification is available through the College of Education or other off campus entities. (UTEACH is also available to juniors and seniors, it may require extra time to complete the program.) Students are eligible to take the state certification examinations when they are in their last semester of coursework for their certification program, or after they have completed all coursework. Top Financial Aid for Latin Teacher CertificationTCA Gareth Morgan Student Teacher Scholarships College seniors enrolled in a Latin certification program in Texas are encouraged to apply for one of two $250 TCA Gareth Morgan Student Teacher Scholarships. Manson A. Stewart Teacher Training Award Designed to provide some financial assistance to those who wish to obtain certification to teach Latin at the primary through secondary level, whether the specific courses are needed in Latin or in Education. The award is not intended to cover all costs of the training and the size of the award varies according to the actual costs (primarily tuition and travel), the size of the committee's budget, and the number of applications; previous awards have been as high as $700. Ruth and Myron G. Kuhlman Scholarship in Classics Offered each year to one or more outstanding UT students who plan on a career in the teaching of Latin. Applicants are awarded up to $1500. Applications available from the Undergraduate Coordinator of the Department of Classics (WAG 121) each March. AISD Future Teacher Scholarship Program Up to $1500 per semester for up to 4 semesters Teach for Texas Conditional Grant Program (TFT) To encourage students to become certified teachers and to encourage these newly certified teachers to teach in a field having a critical shortage of teachers or in communities having a critical shortage of teachers.
