Bibliography on Plutarch

Part of Chaironeia, Plutarch's home on the Web

Readers interested in complete and relatively recent bibliographies of work on Plutarch should consult the review articles in Aufstieg und Niedergang der römischen Welt ( ANRW ) 2.33.6 (Titchener 1991 and Podlecki 1991). For recent important work see Konrad and Stadter's commentaries on the Sertorius and Pericles respectively. Still more recent work can also be gleaned by doing a search for "Plutarch" in the searchable Gopher indexes of the Bryn Mawr Classical Review (BMCR); searching the Gnomon database; or checking out the Tables of Contents of Journals of Interest to Classicists (TOCS-IN). Also Ploutarchos, the organ of the International Plutarch Society has a page of recent papers and works on Plutarch. Almost all abstracts below are taken from the Database of Classical Bibliography.

Hint: wait until the entire file is loaded before clicking an option below or searching the file. Greek text below is given in SMK format, the basis for Macintosh fonts like Athenian, Attica, and Sparta. I'm not sure if compatible fonts for IBM users are available, sorry.

Pauw D. 1980 "Impersonal expressions and unidentified spokesmen in Greek and Roman historiography and biography" AClass 23: 83-95 Abstract: Herodotus uses impersonal expressions and unidentified sources almost exclusively in stating neutral details. Thucydides uses such expressions as a warning that he cannot confirm his information. Xenophon uses unnamed sources to produce negative characterization. Tacitus colors his characters in a negative way without assuming personal responsibility. Plutarch and Suetonius are more cautious but do not refrain from using such expressions when describing characters with bad reputations.

Pelling C. B. R. 1979 "Plutarch's method of work in the Roman lives" JHS 99: 74-96 Abstract: Study of the research needs and techniques for the Roman lives suggests that Plutarch wrote Lucullus and Cicero relatively early and then prepared simultaneously the lives of Pompey, Cato, Crassus, Caesar, Brutus and Antony, a group which allowed considerable overlap in theme and source material. Asinius Pollio was the major source for the last six, as well as other biographies, memoirs, histories, first-hand accounts, oral tradition and Plutarch's own earlier works. After preliminary reading, Plutarch created a rough draft guided largely by Pollio and supplemented by his memory more than by notes. He then would write the finished version with the aid of slaves or freedmen.

Pelling, C. B. R. 1980 "Plutarch's Adaptation of his Source-Material" JHS 100: 127-141. Reprinted in Scardigli 1995: 125-154. Abstract: A discussion of the literary devices used by Plutarch to adapt source material for his lives of Crassus, Pompey, Caesar, Cato, Brutus, and Antony. These lives appear to have been written as a single project from the same store of source material.

Pelling C. B. R. 1985 "Plutarch and Roman politics" in I.S. Moxon, J.D. Smart, A.J. Woodman, eds., Past perspectives : studies in Greek and Roman historical writing :papers presented at a conference in Leeds, 6-8 April 1983. (Cambridge): 159-187. Reprinted in Scardigli 1995: 319-357. Abstract: Plutarch's interest in historical analysis of Roman politics varies in different Lives. There is a distinct interest in historical analysis in the Caesar, Marius, and the Gracchi, but in other Roman lives emphasis is given more to anecdotes or stories which he believes illustrative of character.

Plutarch considered the work of Thucydides an integrated whole, in terms of its relationship between narrative and speeches, and did not give the speeches special treatment, as if they were authentic representations of the speaker.

Estimate of the sources, especially Xenophon, Diodorus, and Plutarch permits correction of the moralizing tendency which permeates the tradition.

Dull C. The evidence of Plutarch, Agesilaus XIX,2 and Xenophon, Mem. III,5,4 together with the numismatic evidence suggest Theban leadership at the battle of Coronea and in the events of 447.

Heckel W. 1978 "Leonnatos, Polyperchon and the introduction of proskynesis" AJP 109 :459-461 Abstract: Arrian (4.12.2) names one Leonnatos as one who ridiculed Alexander's unsuccessful attempt to introduce proskynesis into the Macedonian court in 327 B.C. Quintus Curtius (8.5.22) names the taxiarch Polyperchon. Plutarch (Alex. 74.2-5) tells a similar story about Kassandros, eldest son of the regent Antipatros. The Kassandros story probably derives from later writers influenced by a tradition antipathetic to Antipatros and his sons. Curtius is probably wrong since by his own account and Arrian's Polyperchon was apparently absent when the proskynesis affair took place. There is no reason to doubt Arrian's testimony.

Roesch (cf. APh XLIV p. 578). The stone permits an understanding of Plutarch, Aristides i,6. Various choregic texts from walls south of the Acropolis show that stones from the ancient sanctuary of the Pythion were used in the reinforcing and building of walls. Works on the Demetrius

Habicht, Chr. 1977 "Athenisches Ehrendekret vom Jahre des Koroibos (306/5) für einen königlichen Offizier" AJAH 2: 37-39 Abstract: Discussion of the probable career of a certain Alkimos, known from the fragmentary decree, IG II2 773, which honors him. Evidence drawn from Diodorus XX and Plutarch, shows him to be an officer serving Demetrios Poliorcetes.

Hauben, H. 1976 "Fleet strength at the battle of Salamis (306 B.C.)"

Norman, N. J. 1983 "The Panathenaic ship" Archaeological News 12: 41-46 Abstract: The institution of the ship at the Panathenaia should be attributed to the aims of Demetrius Poliorcetes, probably for the festival of 302 B. C. The peplos, displayed as a sail, was damaged by a storm, according to Plutarch, Demetr. 12. IG II2 657 suggests that it was repaired by Lysimachos for display at the festival of 298 B. C.

It should be regarded as a later invention.

Oost S. I. 1976 "The tyrant kings of Syracuse" CP 71: 224-236 Abstract: The Deinomenids and the Dionysii used the title of king, according to a body of evidence drawn from literary sources, notably Pindar, 0l. I,23 and Pyth. III, 70, Herodotus VII,161,1, Diodorus XI,26,6, Polybius XV, 35, 4, and Plutarch, Dion. XIII, 1 and XXI, 9. The evidence suggests that both dynasties formally used the title of king and that the concepts of tyrant and king were not always separate.

Works on the Fabius Maximus

Kallet-Marx, Robert M. 1995 "Quintus Fabius Maximus and the Dyme affair (Syll. 684)." CQ 45: 129-153. Abstract: A record of Rome's governance over its Greek colonies in 144 BC is written on a commemorative stone found in the city of Dyme in Achea. The inscription reports how the Roman proconsul Quintus Fabius Maximus handled a minor collapse in the city's political structure that led to increasing hostility among its citizens and multiple cases of breaches of contract. The proconsul may have responded by ordering the execution of one local leader accused of burning the city archives.

Works on the Lysander

Duff, Tim 1997 "Moral ambiguity in Plutarch's Lysander-Sulla" in Mossman 1997: 169-188.

Renehan, R. 1981 "Plutarch Lysander II. An addendum" CP 86: 206-207 Abstract: Construe presbeutÆû not as appositional to an understood subject, LÊsandroû, but as itself the true subject. Plutarch has deliberately revised the wording of the Apophthegmata Laconica. The replacement of the proper name by presbeutÆû makes the anecdote appear to be of a wider application (cf. Nº 3617).

Sansone, D. 1981 "Lysander and Dionysius. Plut. Lys. II" CP 76: 202-206 Abstract: The two anecdotes in Lys. II,7-8, are mutually inconsistent. The first illustrates the character of Lysander as indifferent to luxury. The second shows him as a paradigm of covetousness. When Plutarch composed the Lysander he had before him the two anecdotes which now appear in the correct mss. of the Apophthegmata Laconica with the name of Aristas. It is reasonable to assume that Plutarch intended the second of the anecdotes in the Life to be referred to Aristas and that his name has fallen out of our ms. tradition, replaced by the gloss presbeutÆû (cf. Nº 3616).

Buckler J. "Plutarch on the trials of Pelopidas and Epameinondas (369 B.C.)" CP LXXIII (1978) :36-42 Abstract: Plutarch knew only one tradition of the trials of 369, but he emphasized or suppressed different facts in different places depending upon his purpose. The lost Life of Epaminondas probably contained a full account.

Buckler J. "The re-establishment of the Boiotarchia (378 B.C.)" AJAH IV (1979) :50-64 Abstract: By electing boiotarchs in 378 Thebes signalled her intention to restore the confederacy of Boiotian cities upon a federal principle, as it had been before Agesilaus dissolved it in 386. The narrative of Xenophon, in the Hellenica, is tendentious and interprets the confederacy as a Theban domination. Plutarch, in Pelopidas and Agesilaus, is more careful in his use of official terminology and agrees with the evidence of the Hellenica Oxyrhynchia and a Boiotian inscription of the mid-4th cent., SEG XXV 553.

Works on the Pericles

Ameling W. 1985 "Plutarch, Perikles 12-14" Historia 34:47-63 Abstract: Untersuchungen zur Historizität des Berichtes zeigen, wieviel Plutarch aus den Verhältnissen seiner Zeit in das 5. Jh. v. Chr.

Andrewes A. "The opposition to Perikles" JHS XCVIII (1978) :1-8 Abstract: Despite the statements of Plutarch at Pericles, 11-12 and 14, the opposition to Pericles of Thucydides, son of Milesias, was not based on moral objections to the empire. The founding of Thurii was probably the work of Pericles rather than his opponents and had no other aim than the advancement of Athenian interests.

"Solon and athletics" AncW IX (1984) :91-105 Abstract: Evaluation of testimonia, particularly from Plutarch, Diodorus, and Aeschines, relating to athletics and life in the gymnasium and palaestra, insofar as these subjects may have been part of Solon's legislation. His laws on sport should be interpreted in light of his patriotic desire for a harmonious state.

Works on the Sulla

Camp, John 1992 "A trophy from the Battle of Chaironeia of 86 B.C." AJA 96: 443-465. (Other authors: , Michael Ierardi, Jeremy McInerney, Kathryn Morgan and Gretchen Umholtz). Author abstract: (COPYRIGHT AIA): We report the discovery of the remains of a trophy commemorating Sulla's victory near Chaironeia in 86 B.C. These remains include a rectangular base with an inscription on the base which corresponds closely to an inscription quoted by Plutarch. The hilltop on which the trophy was found was ringed by a crude rubble fortification wall, probably built by the Pontic troops stationed there before the battle. Based on the findspot of the trophy and fortification wall, we specify the location of Plutarch's Mount Thourion and propose a new candidate for the river Morios, thereby refining the topography of the battle of 86 B.C.

Works on the Themistocles

Barrett J. "Alcmeon, the enemy of Themistocles" AncW I (1978) :67-69 Abstract: The Alcmeon who is cited as an enemy of Themistocles by Plutarch, in Aristides XXV and Moralia 805C, should be identified with Alcmeon Aristonymou, now attested by six ostraka of the great Kerameikos deposit. Alcmeon the archon in the year of the creation of the ten tribes, according to Pollux VIII,10, and father of Leobotes of Agryle was not the same man.

Barrett J. F. "The downfall of Themistocles" GRBS XVIII (1977) :291-305 Abstract: The apparent conflicts in the testimony of Diodorus, Plutarch and Thucydides on the downfall of Themistocles can in large measure be reconciled, and where they differ, it is Diodorus who is the better source.

The poem was transcribed by Plutarch, but scholars have tended to ignore it. The popularity of the poem is indicated by its use by Plutarch. The poem also indicates a technique of oral tradition, in that symposium songs were a way that real people were made into legendary figures.

Plutarch and General Historical Questions

Braun, Thomas 1994 "'Khrestous poiein.'" CQ 44: 40-45. Abstract: F. Jacoby's interpretation of 'khrestous poiein' (meaning 'to make useful') as referring to making people citizens should be rejected in favor of the interpretation attributed to Aristotle, that the phrase refers to killing. The phrase occurs in Plutarch's 'Greek Questions' and 'Roman Questions,' where it clearly refers to not killing those who assisted the pro-Spartans of Tegea, not to not making them citizens. The meaning of 'citizen' is found nowhere else, whereas 'khrestos' referring to the dead is common. The treaty Plutarch describes probably dates to the end of the Second Messenian War.

Garnsey P. D. A. "Where did Italian peasants live ?" PCPhS XXV (1979) :1-25 Abstract: It has usually been thought, based on information in Appian, Plutarch, and Sallust, that there were few peasant proprietors after the 2nd cent. B.C. But archaeology and epigraphy, as well as literary evidence, show that the free laboring class was larger than has been supposed. In antiquity the relationship between the peasant and the land remained, in spite of the establishment of centres for populi organized in vici and pagi, settlement schemes of the Republican and Augustan periods, slaves as a labor force, and wars.

MacDowell D. M. "Bastards as Athenian citizens" CQ XXVI (1976) :88-91 Abstract: Aristotle, Ath. pol. XLII,1, Ps.-Plutarch. Mor. 834a-b, and Isaeus III,45 suggest that bastardy did not exclude from citizenship a person whose parents were both of Athenian citizen status. The discussion of Aristotle in Pol. 1278a 26-34 and 1319b8-10 is not applied to Athenian citizenship.

Richardson J. S. "The ownership of Roman land. Tiberius Gracchus and the Italians" JRS LXX (1980) :1-11 Abstract: Evaluation of evidence drawn from literary, historical, legal, and epigraphical sources shows that Gracchus may have envisioned Italians as well as Romans as beneficiaries of his land law. This is suggested by Velleius (II,2,2-3) and Appian (Bell. Civ. I,7,26 ff.) but not by Plutarch. Tiberius can be interpreted as offering land and citizenship to the Italian poor.

Greek and Roman authors, notably Plutarch, De def. orac. 417A ; Aem. Paul. XVII,7, Lucretius V,751, and Cicero, De div. I,18, described the obscuring of the moon in total lunar eclipses, but dark lunar eclipses were rare, as they are today.

Hershbell J. Thales has a prominent role, but Plutarch's two reports on Anaximenes and Anaximander are not without value in the attempt to reconstruct their philosophies.

Abstract: Evaluation of the Metamorphoses suggests that Apuleius shared with Plutarch certain religious, philosophical, and moral ideas derived from Plato. Most significant is the reconciliation of Platonist philosophy and the religion of Isis expressed in the De Iside, and several other examples from the Moralia can be found.
