STUDY GUIDE FOR IN-CLASS TEST #2 (FRIDAY NOVEMBER 6TH)

For this test, you will be asked to write three one-page essays. The paper will be given to you, so you do not need to bring a blue book. You have approximately 17 minutes for each question, or 15 minutes for each question plus 5 minutes overall planning.

Please prepare to write on the following topics. On the day of the test, three topics will be given to you on which you will write, so you will prepare six and write three.

1) Discuss the significant similarities and differences among the three accounts of the Underworld that you have read.

2) Choose either functionalism, psychoanalytic theory or structuralism and outline its main points. Then, discuss one myth in the terms of your chosen theory. (For this question, you choose the theory and the myth to discuss.)

3) Discuss the transfer of power, with reference to at least four heroic myths (you choose the myths).

4) Discuss the heroes' relations with women. Discuss at least four heroes (you choose the heroes).

5) Discuss Heracles as a figure who moves between animal, human and god.

6) Discuss the two opposing societies at Troy.

Remember that you need to maintain a balance between recounting the details of the myths and drawing intelligent and interesting conclusions about the myths. Make sure you have topic sentences to introduce your essays and that the material of the essay bears out the thesis of the topic sentence. Although these are short essays, they are still essays, which means you must have a thesis (topic sentence) and examples (discussions of myths) which support your thesis. Do not write out narratives of myths which do not connect to each other or to the question.
