Assignment: According to the representation of women in the texts of Archai Greece that you have read, is it more correct to describe women as agents or as victims? Discuss with reference to at least 3 texts, or which one must be by Sappho.
Due: February 26th
Papers are a minimum of five pages long. They are typed, with reasonable fonts and margins, and pages are stapled or clipped together. Pages are numbered.
Papers have a thesis that they argue. A thesis is something that someone could disagree with. A thesis is not 'I will compare x and y' because nobody could disagree with that. A thesis is 'I will compare x and y and show that z is the case' because someone could disagree that z was the case.
Papers have clear introductory paragraphs that set out the thesis, and concluding paragraphs that show how the thesis has been argued and (hopefully) proved.
Spelling, punctuation, grammar and syntax are correct; there are writing tutors and labs on campus to help, if you think you have difficulties with these matters.
Names of texts are underlined.
References are given for quotations from primary or secondary texts (primary = Greek, secondary = by modern critics)
Paragraphs keep to a reasonable length and do not discuss more than a couple of topics.
Assertions are substantiated with quotations or paraphrases from the texts. Try to argue rather than simply assert, and try to demonstrate that you know what the alternative arguments are.
Consider arranging your time so that you, or a friend, can read over your paper before you hand it in. You may also give me a draft, plan or outline to read. Clearly the last date at which you may hand this in is Thursday 19th, so I can get it to you Tuesday 24th. At a pinch you can send me a draft later, as an email attachment, but this will be subject to the normal problems of email. You may also meet with me to discuss your paper as much as you like; either come to my office hours, or, if that is impossible, make an appointment.
