CC 348/WS 345 WOMEN IN CLASSICAL ANTIQUITY

Dr Barbara Goff

Paper 2 (due April 9th NOT April 7th as stated on syllabus)

Topic: Are the women of Athenian drama the same as the women of other Athenian discourses? If not, why not? If so, why have they often been thought to be different? Discuss with reference to at least three plays.

context: women in Athenian drama have often been considered to challenge the more common representation of women as silent and secluded. There is a long-standing scholarly controversy as to whether this is in fact the case and if so, what the explanations for such challenge might be. This is the general issue I wish you to address in your paper, although you need not engage with all the scholarly literature on the topic. You should, however, be sure to read the secondary literature that is assigned for class meetings, and you will probably want to refer to it in your paper.

discourse: by discourse, I mean the different genres in which we have read, e.g. law, history, philosophy, vase-painting, medicine, religion.

Please read the guidelines for the first paper concerning length, formal features etc.

Please avoid the faults that were prominent in the first paper: DO NOT make large generalizations that you cannot support, in sentences that begin 'Ever since the dawn of time...' and DO NOT make important assertions about the text that are unsupported by quotations or references from the text. (An unimportant assertion is e.g. This text was written by a Greek; an important assertion is e.g. In this text , we can see that Clytemestra is in fact a very sympathetic character.
