Standard Format:
Typed or printed (preferably laser or ink-jet).
Margins a maximum of one inch on top, bottom, and both sides.
10 or 12 point type.
Double spacing or line-and-a-half (1.5) spacing.
Papers should be headed with your name and the date. I do not need your social security number (and it is a bad habit to give it out unless you are specifically asked to do so).
Case write-ups do not need a title, but you should indicate the number of the case in Frier. They should not require footnotes. If you wish to refer to other cases or to passages in the Digest, do so in parentheses in the text. For example: (Frier #112) or (Ulp. D. 3.4.2.2).
The final paper should have a title. For references to Frier or to the Digest use the parenthetical form given above. For other references use footnotes and a standardized form of reference. While not required, I prefer to compile a full bibliography at the end and give references in the form: Author's-last-name (date:page-numbers). For instance, Riggsby (1995:128-31) would refer to pages 128 through 131 of an article listed in the bibliography as Andrew M. Riggsby (1995), "Self-fashioning in the Public Eye: Pliny on Cicero and Oratory," American Journal of Philology 116.123-35.
