OCR on the Epson Perfection 636U scanner

The Epson scanner, attached to Ourania in the Lab, can be used to scan text.

Place the text face down on the scanner's glass against the right side and top (see the arrow).

From the Apple menu, select Layout & Text -- Presto! PageManager

The Page Manager desktop will appear. Note the Scan Buttons tool bar to the right.

In the Scan Buttons tool bar, click on the Simple Text icon with the arrow:

This will launch the Epson TWAIN scanner software. The menu will appear, and a preview will automatically be scanned. Check the settings. If they do not look like this:

-- click on the Settings button.

The Settings menu will appear (at right). Select OCR.

Outline the part of the text that you want to scan.

Click on the Scan button .

When it is finished, close the window.

Wait while the OCR takes place -- you will see a status bar -- and then the document will be saved to the Documents folder as a text-only .txt file.

Now you can use the text as usual -- open it in Claris Home Page to make a web document, or in Nisus for a handout or html or other word processing.
