STATEMENT OF CLASS PURPOSE

This course is an introduction to cities and ways of studying them. Topics are introduced through lectures and direct exploration of the urban environment. Subjects include:

  • perceptions of urban space
  • urban society
  • the history of the city
  • ethnic segregation and its impacts
  • urban responses to economic restructuring
  • fundamentals of urban planning

Special attention is given to the role of social class, gender, and ethnic diversity in the development of urban America.

The majority of the course work consists of projects in which students analyze real-world situations using basic concepts from lectures and readings.
