Arcades/Passages/Galeries

The shopping mall is not an invention of the 20th century, although malls were greatly popularized by their construction in the US following World War II. The original shopping malls were covered passageways (also known as galeries or arcades) built in Paris in the early 1800s. Some preserved ones can be found in Paris' 2nd arrondissement. They inspired Walter Benjamin's famous meditations on the nature of modernity.
