Many people recognize the front of Notre Dame de Paris, yet few visitors take the time to really look at the wonderful sculptures above the cathedral's massive doors. Here we can see scenes of hell from the right side of the central portal. For the parishioners who were mainly illiterate up to the late 19th century, sculptures and stained-glass windows were important media for conveying the stories and beliefs of Christianity. |
