Additional Features for Using PowerPoint 2003 with JAWS
Adding ALT Text
You can provide alternative (ALT) text for the images, charts, and other objects you insert into a slide. This is a useful feature as it makes the visual objects accessible to JAWS through a description of the item. The ALT text does not appear on the slide so it cannot be seen. It is only read by JAWS. To check the ALT text without JAWS, go into the Web tab and read the text content in the alternative text edit field.
Instructions:
- From the slide area, tab to the placeholder or object you want to describe.
- Press Alt + O to access the format menu.
- The submenu needed will depend on what object you want to describe. For example, the picture submenu will be used when creating ALT text for graphics. In this case, arrow down to picture and press Enter. A "Format Object" dialog box will appear.
- Press Ctrl + Tab to switch to the Web tab.
- Press Tab to get to the "alternative text" edit field and enter descriptive text which describes the graphic.
- Tab to Ok and press the space bar.
