Additional Features for Using PowerPoint 2003 with JAWS
Inserting a Picture
In addition to text, pictures can also be added to slides. You can select a picture from a file, which contains your own selection of pictures, or use the Clip Art feature, which has a large selection of pictures from Microsoft to choose from. Review the layout options above to determine the best layout for your slide. Once you insert a picture, you can adjust its size or where it appears on the slide.
Instructions:
To Insert "Clip Art" Picture:- From the slide area, tab to the placeholder where you want the picture displayed. Note: It is not necessary to open the object placeholder to insert a picture. If it is opened, the Format menu appears but it can be easily closed by tabbing to cancel and pressing Enter.
- Press Alt + I to access the Insert menu.
- Arrow to Picture submenu and press Enter.
- Select the Clip Art option by pressing Enter. This opens up to several dialog boxes and most likely your cursor will be on the "search for" edit field.
- Type in the word that best describes the type of picture you want to find. (For example, if you want a picture of a dog, type the word "dog" in this edit field.)
- Tab to the "results should be" combo box. There are two options that can appear in this box, "all media file types" and "selected media file types". "All media file types means when you open the combo box, all the file types listed are checked including the checkbox next to "All media types". Your search results could include Clip Art, photographs, sounds and movies. If "selected media file types" is in the "results should be" box, then when you open the combo box, one or more of the file type options is checked but not all of them (Clip Art, photograph, sound, movie). Each option has a checkbox to the left. Your search results will only include the types with a selected checkbox.
- Open the combo box and change the checkbox selection(s) as needed. For example, if the results are for "selected media file types" and you would like all of the file types, press the space bar to toggle on the checkbox for "All media types". If "all media files types" is selected, and you only want Clip Art, press the spacebar to uncheck the checkbox for the other choices (photographs, movies, sounds). You should only receive results for Clip Art files. Note: Once an option is checked, you can tab out of this combo box and return to it to see which options are checked to ensure you made the selection you want. In this case, when Clip Art is selected the combo box highlights "selected media file types". Additionally, the selected media file types are tree views and if you arrow to the right, another list appears with a list of file types to specify. For example, when you are on Clip Art, arrow to the right and 11 types of Clip Art files appear in a list. These can be checked and selected for your search. It is not necessary to open the tree view. If Clip Art is checked, the search will include all 11 types of Clip Art files.
- Shift tab to the "go" button and select it.
- Tab to the list box which contains a list of pictures (dogs in our example) and arrow to the picture you want to select for your slide.
- Press Enter twice to insert the picture into the slide.
To Insert a Picture Using the "From File":
- From the slide area, tab to the place holder where you want the picture displayed.
- Press Alt + I to access the Insert menu.
- Arrow to the Picture submenu and press Enter.
- Arrow to the "From file" option and press Enter. There are a series of dialog boxes to tab through.
- Select the folder that contains the picture you wish to insert into the slide and then select the file with the picture.
- Tab to the insert button and press the space bar.
Note: If a formatting menu pops up when you insert a picture or open the object placeholder, you can tab to cancel and press Enter. If you want to use it to format your picture, refer to the Formatting Inserted Pictures section of this tutorial.
