Changing or Choosing a Layout

There are a variety of layout selections to choose for your presentation. This tutorial outlines the steps necessary to select a layout for an already existing slide or a newly created slide. In either case, the layout menu provides a number of options. As described in our Basic Powerpoint tutorial, the default layout contains placeholders for a title and a body. There are, however, other possible options that include a range of layouts for charts, tables, and pictures. The layout choices are grouped under the following headings: "Text Layouts", "Content Layouts", "Text and Content Layouts", and "Other Layouts".

The Text layouts include:

The Content, the Text and Content Layouts, and the Other Layouts allow you to position your text and images/charts etc into placeholders on the slide. For example, one of the Text and Content Layouts is called Title, Text, and Content. It has a designated spot for a title on the top, text on the right, and a choice of a picture, table, chart, video or diagram on the left. In the area where you can add charts, videos, picture and so on, there is an icon that provides a shortcut method for adding these items when using a mouse. This icon does not appear to be keyboard accessible. However, in additional sections of our tutorial, we have outlined the keyboard steps for using the menus to add different types of content to this content area.

Instructions:

  1. Press Alt + O from the slide area to open the Format menu.
  2. Select "Slide layout". The layout menu appears and you can arrow up, down or right and left to the layout of your choice.
  3. Press Enter. The layout on the current slide will change to the layout that you selected from the list.
  4. Press Shift + F6 to return to the slide area to view the new layout.
