A Tribute to Barbara Jordan
The University of Texas at Austin Barbara Jordan Statue Project Committee composed of students, faculty, staff, and alumni selected artist Bruce Wolfe of Piedmont, California, to create a commemorative outdoor bronze statue in honor of the late Barbara Jordan, making it the first statue of a woman to be installed on The University of Texas at Austin campus. The Barbara Jordan Statue Unveiling is scheduled for April 24, 2009 from noon to 1 p.m. at the statue site located at 24th and Whitis Streets.
In 1972, Barbara Jordan did the impossible: she was elected as the first African-American woman from the South to serve in the U.S. Congress. Her career spanned four decades, and her passion for her country's ideals and her rousing oratory style brought her success as a politician, a champion of civil rights, and a professor at The University of Texas at Austin. Ms. Jordan's tireless efforts for her nation and her fellow citizens made her a national treasure. Barbara Jordan remains an example of how one person's commitment to her beliefs can inspire and shape the world.
