Statue Project Procedures
Initial review will be made by a panel of select jurors based on the past work of the artists. Artists must submit slides and other relevant materials that demonstrate a strong history of conceiving and executing large-scale sculpture. (Applicants should not send original slides or original works of art.) Artists will also be asked to include a visual concept of a proposed design for the Barbara Jordan statue along with a site concept using the selected location as a guide.
Three to five artists will be invited to develop maquettes for the proposed statue. Each of the selected artists will receive $5,000 to produce a maquette, which will become the property of The University of Texas at Austin.
A committee consisting of the select jurors, technical consultants, and members of the student-led Barbara Jordan Statue Project Committee will review the maquettes. Upon the completion of this review process, artists selected from this pool who qualify for the next phase will be expected to travel to Austin and present their concept orally to the committee.
