Campus Programming & Partnerships
DEI Roundtables
The institute sponsors roundtables each semester, often in the format of a film screening and discussion. These conversations offer an opportunity for members of the university community to come together and explore topics of diversity and multiculturalism that are often challenging to navigate. Examples of past roundtable topics include: Internalized racism; Disability: Intersections with race and ethnicity; The life of author, James Baldwin, exploring intersections of race and sexual orientation; and “Daddy and Papa,” examining the challenges of gay couples who want to adopt children.
Support for Diversity Educators
Our diversity educator programming, which includes brown bag discussions such as “Avoiding Burnout and Staying Connected,” and workshop series, such as Surviving and Thriving: Continued Excellence in Diversity Education” (see full description later in this booklet), is designed to support the efforts of faculty and staff who engage in this challenging work on campus.
UT Austin Division of Instructional Innovation and Assessment (DIIA)
The DIIA integrates pedagogy, instructional technology, and assessment promoting effective and innovative instructional and evaluation practices in support of the University's core purpose and values. The Diversity Education Institute is collaborating with DIIA to teach a three-session series offering to graduate student instructors on “Teaching in the Diverse Classroom.” This series would result in an ASPECTS program certificate. The series is tentatively scheduled to begin in the 2009-2010 academic year. For more information on the ASPECTS program see: http://www.utexas.edu/academic/diia/gsi/aspects/index.php
UT Austin Police Department (UTPD)
All law enforcement officers in Texas are required to participate in diversity training on a regular basis. Beginning in Fall 2008, the Diversity Education Institute began a collaborative consulting relationship with UTPD to enhance and innovate the required Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) Cultural Diversity course. After months of planning, the course has been TCELOSE credit approved and a series of workshops were conducted. All UTPD officers participated. The course was facilitated jointly by DEI staff and UTPD officers.
