Coordinator, 2010 Conference for Women in Higher Education
Women's Center University of Minnesota, Twin Cities
The University of Minnesota invites applications for the Coordinator of the 2010 National Conference for Women in Higher Education.  Reporting to the Director of the Women's Center with guidance from the Vice President and Vice Provost (VP/VP) for Equity and Diversity, the Coordinator has primary responsibility for the successful coordination of the National Conference.  The Coordinator position carries a University of Minnesota administrative staff 50% time 12 -- month appointment.  Minimum qualifications are a bachelor's degree, 2 years of direct experience planning large events, fundraising experience, and demonstrated experience working effectively with diverse constituencies.  Prefer experience planning a national conference; prior work experience in a women's center, women's studies, or diversity/multicultural affairs unit.

Program Assistant, ISU Women’s Center

The Program Assistant will assist the director with the following: development of center priorities and goals; research and assessment of programs and campus needs; development and coordination of educational outreach programming; identification and development of fundraising efforts; and the maintenance of website content and organization. In addition, s/he will act as a liaison to Women's Center partnerships, campus offices and committees; monitor and track expenditures; assist with the Director's written communication and reports; plan events and travel; organize meetings and prepare minutes. The incumbent will also assist in promoting the Women's Center's visibility and influence in the campus community by identifying, developing, and sustaining an extensive network of relationships with students, staff, faculty and community members.

University of North Florida LGBT Resource Center Coordinator

Coordinates the activities of the LGBT Center at the University that provides education, advocacy, and support for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning and straight-allied students. The Center's goal is to create increased education, awareness and sensitivity to LGBT issues. The Coordinator will; 1) Advise and counsel students individually and in groups, regarding LGBT issues, 2) Develop and implement programs for the University community to create greater awareness and sensitivity to LGBT issues, 3) Serve as a role model and mentor for LGBT students and other University community members, 4) Serve as the primary office staff person and perform general office duties including maintenance of a budget and supervision of student assistants, and 5) participate in fund raising events and provide program assessment. 1. Stop Hate Training

Between June of 1998 and July of 1999, four of the most notorious hate crimes in our recent history occurred in the United States. James Byrd Jr. was murdered in Jasper, Texas by three white supremacists. Matthew Shepard was murdered in Laramie, Wyoming after being tied to a fence and beaten. Two high school seniors killed twelve of their peers and one teacher at Columbine High School. A deadly shooting spree across Indiana and Illinois, Ricky Byrdsong, black former basketball coach of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and Won Joon Yoon, a Korean doctoral student at Indiana University were shot dead. In the 10 years since this tragic 18-month period, too many others have become victims of hate and have been murdered including Sean Kennedy, Gwen Araujo, Lawrence King, Angie Zapata, Satendar Singh, and Jeremy Waggoner, just to name a few.
Stop the Hate dedicates the 2008-2009 academic year to the memory of all victims of bias and hate and has scheduled two special trainings, one on the East Coast and one on the West Coast, as part of the "10 Year Observance of Remembering the Legacy of Matthew Shepard." Since 2000, we have equipped over 1000 trainers across the United States on college campuses. Take Action. Become a Stop the Hate Trainer. 3. THE ART OF GENDER IN EVERYDAY LIFE VI

A multidisciplinary conference, The Art of Gender in Everyday Life VI, will take place at Idaho State University (ISU), April 2 & 3, 2009. In addition to sessions, the conference will include: a keynote, by Dr. Emily Toth, A.K.A. Ms. Mentor from The Chronicle of Higher Education , on the evening of Friday, April 2; and a screening of LUNAFEST on Friday evening. The Conference committee is seeking proposals for papers, workshops, artwork, performances, poster sessions, and other contributions that speak to this year's conference theme examining the global intersections of gender and the environment. Sessions will be held on Friday afternoon as well as all day Saturday and will be 75 minutes long; Workshop lengths will vary, but individual papers will be held to a 15-minute time limit. 9. Power Lines:

Women take various paths to enter traditional sites of power. For three days in February, the Newcomb College Institute will explore how women can transform the notion of leadership during its second biannual summit, POWER LINES: Women Transform the Grid. It is scheduled for February 5-7, 2009 at Tulane University in New Orleans.

10. Transgender and Transsexual Identities: The Next Strange Fruit


The Journal of Hate Studies has printed a number of articles that may be of interest including: Transgender and Transsexual Identities: The Next Strange Fruit - Hate Crimes, Violence, and Genocide Against the Global Trans-Communities; Homophobic Hate Propoganda in Canada; Ancient Hatred and its Contemporary Manifestation: The Torture of Lesbians. The Journal is currently seeking submissions for volume 7. Please let me know if you have any questions. The Gonzaga University Institute for Action Against Hate* is soliciting submissions for the seventh volume of the peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary Journal of Hate Studies.

We are interested in papers from various disciplines that address “The Science of Hate.” This may include research and knowledge about hate’s origins and manifestations seen through the lenses of empirical sciences that rely on experimental, quantifiable data or the scientific method and emphasize reliability and validity. We are also interested in papers that explore solutions and strategies for addressing hate from an empirical perspective, as well as methods and content that may combat the manifestation of hate. A special invitation is extended to scholars from disciplines such as biology, medicine, chemistry, economics, genetics, cybernetic evolution, and the neurosciences. Submissions are welcome from all disciplines.

Submissions are due by February 1, 2009, and should be between 5000-10,000 words. Submissions should include one hard copy and an electronic copy in MS Word format. Please do not submit PDF files. Submissions should be presented in APA format and contain endnotes rather than footnotes.

1. Heterosexual Parents of LGB Children

My name is Kristopher Goodrich and I am a doctoral candidate in Syracuse University’s Counseling & Human Services Department. I am currently working on a project for my doctoral degree in which I am exploring the experiences of heterosexual parents of lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB) children.
My interest in conducting this research is to investigate the various factors that impact parents’ experiences after their children discloses their identity as lesbian, gay or bisexual. Participants will be asked to complete an online research packet, which includes demographic information and a number of brief survey instruments. The instruments should take approximately 20-25 minutes to complete.

3. Campus Pride Launches National Voice & Action Award to Recognize Young Adult Leaders across the United States

This month as thousands gear up for college, Campus Pride (www.campuspride.org) launches the Voice & Action National Leadership Award, an honorary recognition highlighting the extraordinary contributions of young adult leaders at colleges and universities across the United States. Never has there been a national award focused solely on the work of undergraduate college students who are creating positive change for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and ally issues. 4. Course Listing: Cetalic

Saludos from CETLALIC! We are a GLBT-friendly Spanish language school in Cuernavaca, Mexico, dedicated to the traditions of solidarity, community service and social responsibility. *In January 2009, we will be offering a programs for all people interested in studying Spanish while learning about Queer life in Mexico today*. The programs is*: "WINTER LGBT PROGRAM" that takes place from *January 10 – January 23, 2009.

This program offer the opportunity to learn about the real situation of queer people in Mexico today in these times of political, economic and social changes. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the similarities and differences between the struggles for equality and freedom in their country and in Mexico. Students will meet artists, activists and community leaders and learn about the history of the queer movement in Mexico. We will share coming out stories, learn about Mexican culture and gender roles and gain a cultural understanding of the cultural context of gay and lesbian identity in Mexico.

Besides the aforementioned Queer programs, we also have our Regular Program open throughout the year in which individuals can start classes on any Monday, study for as many weeks as they wish, and also have the opportunity to live with a Mexican family. All of our homestays are queer or queer-friendly.

CETLALIC was founded in 1987 as an alternative school, integrating intensive study of Spanish language with experiential cultural learning and analysis of current issues with grassroots organizations and others who are actively involved in their society.

6. Martin Duberman Visiting Scholars

The New York Public Library is pleased to announce the creation of the LGBT Visiting Scholars Program. Each year the Library will provide stipends for up to three Martin Duberman Visiting Scholars. The stipends will support travel to New York City and related expenses to do LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) studies research in the Library's collections. The travel grants awarded will range from $1,000 to $8,500. The awards will be limited to emerging scholars—those without permanent academic appointments—or those who are unaffiliated with an academic institution.

Martin Duberman Visiting Scholars will also be provided with temporary workspace at the Library to pursue their research. Recipients must supply a written summary of their findings upon completion of their work.

The LGBT collections of the New York Public Library are among the greatest in the country. The archival collections include the archives of pioneering LGBT activists, such as Morty Manford, Barbara Gittings and Kay Tobin Lahusen; scholars such as Martin Duberman, Jonathan Ned Katz, and Karla Jay; organizational archives of pivotal civil rights groups such as the Mattachine Society of New York and Gay Activists Alliance; and of LGBT writers such as W. H. Auden, Virginia Woolf, and Joseph Beam. The Library is also home to the archives of major organizations in the history of the AIDS crisis, including ACT UP New York and GMHC. The Library has extensive holdings in the history of drag performance and LGBT theatre, such as the archives of Charles Ludlum. It is also home to the Black Gay and Lesbian Archive which documents the history of LGBT African Americans. This is supported by extensive book and periodical holdings in LGBT studies.

Interested applicants should send a 3-5 page research proposal specifying the relevant collections at the Library for their project, a draft budget and itinerary for their planned trip, a CV, and an appropriate letter of recommendation. Applications must be received by January 31. Notice of awards will be sent beginning March 1. Recipients must make their trip within a year of the award.
