Lanese Aggrey, Ph.D.
Director of Academic Service Learning

Lanese Aggrey
Dr. Lanese Aggrey directs the Office of Academic Service Learning at The University of Texas at Austin.  She describes academic service learning as the marriage between the classroom and service to a community and believes that with proper care, this experience can enrich the lives of all involved. Increasingly, Dr. Aggrey works in international academic service learning, most recently taking 39 students to Ghana for six weeks in summer 2009.  Dr. Aggrey is also a faculty member in UT’s Department of African and African Diaspora Studies.
She previously served as Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Multicultural Services at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL.  
Dr. Aggrey has taught numerous courses at The University of Texas, Augustana College, and The University of Iowa, where she also served as Diversity Resource Program Assistant for several years.
She earned a Ph.D in Educational Policy and Leadership Studies with a minor in Counseling from the University of Iowa. Her master’s work is also from the University of Iowa in African and African-American World Studies.

Katasia Brown
Katasia is currently a Master’s candidate in Community and Regional Planning at the School of Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin.  She received her BS in Mass Communication at Tennessee State University in Nashville, TN. Her areas of interest include poverty, affordable housing, community development, civic engagement and social policy. She is the proud mother of a beautiful daughter and plans to pursue a doctoral degree in urban studies or public policy.

Amanda Brown
Amanda is a 2010 graduate of Southern Methodist University with a B.A. in Anthropology and Latin American Studies. Her passions are human rights, fiction writing, and baking. In the ASL office, she is developing a new undergraduate internship program that partners interns with local non-profits.

Rose Cahalan, B.A.
Academic Service Learning Coordinator

Rose Cahalan
Rose is a 2010 graduate of Rice University, where she earned a B.A. in English and a teaching certificate in English as a Second Language instruction. As the Academic Service Learning Coordinator, she promotes ASL across all colleges and disciplines at UT-Austin, provides resources to faculty developing and teaching service courses, and leads the office’s marketing and publicity efforts.
