Academic Service Learning and Tenure

In April 2009, it was announced in The University of Texas at Austin 2009 Tenure and Promotion Guidelines that academic service learning is an important aspect of teaching at the University.  Specifically, under the "Teaching" section, there is now a bullet that states, “The budget council’s assessment of the candidate’s overall teaching record should:.. “Describe and provide documentation of organized service learning instruction, where applicable."

Currently professors that have taught academic service learning courses are working with the Volunteer and Service Learning Center Academic Service Learning Programto receive this certification. The VSLC’s letter announcing approval will be the documentation needed by faculty wishing to include service learning in their tenure packets.

For more information, contact the Volunteer and Service Learning Center at 512-471-6161, or email Dr. Lanese Aggrey, Director of Academic Service Learning.
