23rd Annual Heman Sweatt Symposium - April 14-17, 2009, Free and Open to the Public

You are cordially invited to attend the 23rd Annual Heman Sweatt Symposium on Civil Rights, April 14-17, 2009, with events hosted on The University of Texas at Austin campus, coordinated by the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement and sponsored by several university departments. The annual symposium honors the legacy of Heman Marion Sweatt, the first African American to attend The University of Texas School of Law.

Themed, Sidelined: Racial Politics at Predominately White Institutions, the symposium will examine modern day issues that affect students of color at predominately white campuses. Programs will examine the proposed changes to the Top 10% Policy, the racial climate on campus, and the intersection of race, gender, and sports.


This year's keynote speaker will be Jerry LeVias. Mr. LeVias will deliver the closing keynote address on Friday, April 17, at 7 p.m, at the AT&T Conference Center, located on The University of Texas campus.  Please check back for a complete schedule of events.

Mr. Jerry Levias, the first African American to play football at Southern Methodist University (SMU) and the first African American to receive an athletic scholarship in the Southwest Conference, will be the keynote speaker. Mr. Levias will talk about his experience as the first African American football player at SMU and his role in integrating college football in the South.
