SATURDAY, JANUARY 16
MLK Day of Service
9:00 AM @ Huston-Tillotson University
The MLK Day of Service, sponsored by the United Way’s Hands on Central Texas. The MLK Day of Service is a day where many groups and organizations join together by volunteering their time and energy to provide service to the East Austin community. Dr. Richard Reddick, assistant professor in UT’s Department of Educational Administration and DDCE Fellow will provide a keynote address. Entertainment will include performances by The Cipher-Austin’s Hip Hop Project. The Division of Diversity and Community Engagement (DDCE) and the John L. Warfield Center for African and African American Studies are sponsoring the annual rally and march to the Capitol in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. 

 

TUESDAY, JANUARY 26
National Forum for Black Public Administrators and DDCE Host a Town Hall Meeting: “Health Care Reform & Health Disparities:  Faces of a Healthy Future”
6:00 pm at the AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center Amphitheater
An overhaul of the U.S. health-care system has gained the floor of national debate.  What is done to spur and inspire changes in culture, lifestyle and infrastructure will determine whether changes happen in meaningful and measurable ways within local communities. This town-hall meeting, featuring national health-care and local experts, will discuss health-care issues for specific populations, including people of African, Asian, Hispanic and American Indian descent, and of veterans, the disabled and those with mental illness. GSC Hosts Talk and Performance with Tim Miller

Performance Artist Tim Miller discusses and performs excerpts from his latest work, “Lay of the Land”, a saucy, sharp-knifed look at the State of the Queer Union during a time of trial. Careening from his misadventures while performing in 45 States, to street protests for Marriage Equality, to the electoral assaults on gay folks all over the country, “Lay of the Land” gets at that feeling of gay folks being perpetually on trial, on the ballot, and on the menu!  For additional information, please visit www.utgsc.com.

Dine with a Coach to Support the Neighborhood Longhorns Program
@ Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium’s McCombs Red Zone 8th Floor Club
UT Athletics directors DeLoss Dodds and Chris Plonsky, in conjunction with the Neighborhood Longhorns Program (NLP), are hosting the 10th annual “Dine with a Coach” event. All proceeds from the event support educational services provided by the Neighborhood Longhorns Program. NLP is an educational incentive program established in 1991 by UT Athletics and now part of the DDCE. It provides services to more than 5,000 students in second through eighth grades at 30 schools throughout the Austin community. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 3
Volunteer and Service Learning Center Hosts Spring 2010 Volunteer Fair
10:00 AM – 3:00 PM @ West Mall
The University Volunteer and Service Learning Center & the UT Student Volunteer Board will be hosting the Spring 2010 Volunteer Fair. Around 70 non-profit & government agencies will be on hand seeking enthusiastic volunteers and promoting volunteer service. At the fair, students can find information on volunteer opportunities with organizations from across Central Texas. The VSLC is a campus-based clearinghouse and action center for students, faculty and staff interested in making a difference in their community. The Student Volunteer Board serves as the student-run programming arm of the VSLC. Our goal is to provide prospective volunteers with the information they need to choose a volunteer opportunity. The Spring 2010 Volunteer Fair is just one of many activities the VSLC and the Student Volunteer Board organize throughout the year to encourage community service. Feria Para Aprender (The Learning Fair)
10:00 AM – 2:00 PM @ Travis County Exposition Center, 7311 Decker Ln, 78724
The Feria Para Aprender (The Learning Fair) was first created in Austin, Texas in 2007.
For 2009, the Feria is expanding its unique Spanish-language only educational format to a regional event to include multiple school districts throughout the greater Austin area. More than 10,000 parents and youth are expected to be in attendance. The event will feature more than 100 exhibits by school districts, nonprofits, colleges, universities, and scholarship groups. DDCE is a proud sponsor of this event.

Poet Natalio Hernández to Present for Indigenous Studies Speakers Series

Poet, professor, activist, and organizer Natalio Hernández will present “Yancuic xochicuicatl/Nuevos cantos floridos/New Flowery Songs”. Portions of this presentation will be in Náhuatl, Spanish, and English. The presentation is sponsored by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies (LLILAS), and the Indigenous Studies Initiative (ISI).

Call for Papers: 24th Annual Heman Sweatt Symposium on Civil Rights
“60 years of Integration, 1950-2010: Civil Rights Then and Now”
You are cordially invited to submit a paper for the 24th Annual Heman Sweatt Symposium on Civil Rights, April 22-23 with events hosted on the UT campus. A portion of the symposium will be devoted to undergraduate and graduate student presentations focusing on the historical implications of integration in higher education and/or issues related to the conference theme. Abriendo Brecha is an annual conference on activism scholarship held at the University of Texas at Austin and is sponsored by the DDCE. Abriendo Brecha VII calls for a renewed discussion on the meanings and practices of activist scholarship, particularly as it relates to the challenges of the present moment. Some themes for this year’s conference include: Race and Inequality throughout the Americas; Environmental Justice Movements; and The Global Economic Crisis. This year’s conference will consist of a mixed format that includes panels, workshops, poster presentations, performances and film. Explore UT, the biggest open house in Texas, provides an opportunity for visitors to examine the rich and varied programs that are a part of everyday life on this campus. In the schedule of activities, explorers will discover is something to thrill the kid in all of us. Explore UT has been held the first Saturday of March since 2001. Like most open houses, it offers an opportunity to come "inside" — in this case, to see the university’s literary and art collections, learn about its cutting-edge scientific research, experience its history and traditions, and interact with faculty, staff and students. 2010 Asian American Studies Annual Conference and Community Awards Ceremony

The Association for Asian American Studies (AAAS), and the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at The University of Texas at Austin co-host this conference and community awards ceremony to honor individuals, organizations, and specific projects that have made outstanding contributions to Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) communities in Central Texas. The aim is to acknowledge and to honor those who have assumed leadership roles in advocating for APIDA and immigrant causes, providing services and outreach, fostering community and history, and promoting awareness of APIDA issues. Barbara Jordan Historical Essay Competition Ceremony

Open to all Texas high school students, grades 9-12, this competition provides students the opportunity to explore history by talking with grandparents, aunts, and uncles, as well as community, business, and religious leaders about their neighborhood and community. Students will develop an essay related to the competition's theme, "The African American in Texas: Past and Present." GSC to Co-Host Lavender Graduation

The Lavender Graduation Committee, a group of students and staff from the Gender and Sexuality Center Advisory and Working Group and the Queer Students Alliance would like to invite you to attend the third annual Lavender Graduation at UTAustin. Lavender Graduation is a special graduation ceremony and reception that honors the achievements of graduating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and ally students on campus. The first Lavender Graduation took place in 1995 with a handful of students at the University of Michigan. The ceremony now takes place at many universities throughout the country and continues to grow each year. According to Dr. Ronni Sanlo, the originator of the first Lavender Graduation, the ceremony supports the university’s mission of providing services that promote the academic achievement of LGBTQ students.
