Summer Institute for the Gifted (SIG)
The DDCE is pleased to announce that the Summer Institute for the Gifted (SIG) will be hosted at the University of Texas at Austin from July 12 to August 1, 2009. UT-Austin faculty and staff are invited to submit an application for their children in grades 4-11. Central to the SIG–Residential program is the idea that by living where they learn, students become part of a community of like-minded young people and adults. These students are committed to academic excellence, social and emotional growth, and creative and recreational excitement. The Intellectual Entrepreneurship Pre-Graduate School Internship is an opportunity for undergraduate students to work closely with a graduate student mentor and/or faculty member.
Throughout the semester, interns discover those unique aspects of graduate study that make it distinct from the undergraduate experience, such as conducting research, serving as teaching and research assistants, and participating in seminars. University Outreach Center’s Hosts University Jumpstart
On UT campus
University Jumpstart is a summer academic skills enhancement program for University Outreach students. This program is a bridge between junior high and high school. In math, students review algebra I concepts and are introduced to geometry. In science, students study biology and learn laboratory procedures. Students also receive instruction in personal development, including public speaking. This camp is generally held on a college campus to give students a first-hand experience of a simulated college life. University Jumpstart is the signature program for the University Outreach Centers.

Summer Institute for the Gifted (SIG)
The University of Texas at Austin Campus 
The Pre-College Academic Readiness Programs (PCARP) within Pre-College Youth Development Programs and Student Academic Success Initiatives is the sponsor of this summer learning experience for identified gifted students. Participants in grades 4-ll from around the United States and other countries spend 3 weeks on UT's campus fully engaged in academic, cultural, and other enrichment activities. Every student is scheduled for five academic periods during each of the 15 academic days. There is a recreational hour after the last course period. On weekends, students participate in a variety of activities (off-campus trips on Saturdays and extended evening programs) that provide a change of pace and further enrichment, specifically designed for the academically gifted student. DDCE Participates in GAHCC 2009 Summer Hillside Concert

DDCE participates in the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation 2009 Summer Hillside Concert. This summer the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation (GAHCC EF), in partnership with the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department, present "Don Yojan y La Frescura". Targeted toward high schools with large Hispanic populations, this one-of-a-kind summer music series is designed to embrace the Hispanic culture and promote the importance of education, and staying in school.  We expect 300-500 persons in attendance. ICUSP and LEADERSHIP ENRICHMENT ARTS PROGRAM (LEAP) Final Performance

For the second year, LEAP is hosting campers on the UT/Austin campus beginning Sunday, July 12th. Forty local boys and girls ranging in ages 12-18 will sample "A Taste of College" by living in Jester Center and attending specially designed classes in Leadership and the Arts. This affords the kids an opportunity to 'imagine' college as a comfortable place for their futures. It is an all Longhorn affair as we have hired UT grad students to design and instruct the classes and the art classes will be conducted in The Blanton Museum with the assistance of staff. LEAP is celebrating its twentieth year of offering these free camps and we are looking forward to a strong and long relationship with UT/Austin through our partnership with Institute for Community, University and School Partnerships (ICUSP). GSC to Co-Host Lavender Graduation

The Lavender Graduation Committee, a group of students and staff from the Gender and Sexuality Center Advisory and Working Group and the Queer Students Alliance would like to invite you to attend the second annual Lavender Graduation at The University of Texas at Austin. Lavender Graduation is a special graduation ceremony and reception that honors the achievements of graduating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and ally students on campus. The first Lavender Graduation took place in 1995 with a handful of students at the University of Michigan. The ceremony now takes place at many universities throughout the country and continues to grow each year. According to Dr. Ronni Sanlo, the originator of the first Lavender Graduation, the ceremony supports the university’s mission of providing services that promote the academic achievement of LGBTQ students. Sanlo further envisions Lavender Graduation as a celebration that includes LGBTQ students of all backgrounds and acknowledges their contributions to the campus. The ceremony is one way the university can promote a positive connection with LGBTQ students and set the stage for future involvement and support as the students become alumnae/i of the institution. Panel Discussion: “When Barbara Jordan Talked, We Listened”

Barbara Jordan was an outstanding orator, committed protector of the Constitution, lifelong politician, and great mentor to many. In this panel discussion, Max Sherman, former Dean of the LBJ School of Public Affairs and other invited panelists will celebrate Barbara Jordan’s great gifts and the tremendous impact she had on individuals and communities. The panel will be moderated by Jim Henson, Director of the Texas Politics Project.  On May 1, a podcast of the panel discussion will be made available at http://www.lib.utexas.edu/ and at http://texaspolitics.laits.utexas.edu/. Open to all Texas high school students, grades 9-12, this competition provides students the opportunity to explore history by talking with grandparents, aunts, and uncles, as well as community, business, and religious leaders about their neighborhood and community. Students will develop an essay related to the competition's theme, "The African American in Texas: Past and Present." The booth exhibit will highlight Barbara Jordan’s accomplishments and educational history as well as help to raise awareness and support for the DREAM Act 2009 petition. Exhibit is presented by Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Inc.


Roundtable:  Building Coalitions− How University Resource Groups Reflect Barbara Jordan’s Vision
Location: TBD  11:30 a.m. –1 p.m.

Ms. Jordan was a champion of civil rights who worked tirelessly to build coalitions in order to create an inclusive society that valued and respected all of its citizens. This roundtable discussion will bring constituents of the University Resource Groups together to highlight each organization’s mission and to find “commonality through shared differences to initiate change.” The University Resource Groups include the Asian and Asian American Faculty Staff Association, the Black Faculty Staff Association, the Hispanic Faculty Staff Association, and the Pride Equity Faculty Staff Association.


Step Show: Step for Hope and Soul Sessions
Main Mall (UT Tower) – Noon-1 p.m.

The Step for Hope program is geared toward diversifying the UT student body. The UT community is invited to learn a unique step routine which will be followed by a break-dancing and hip hop routine performed by Soul Sessions, a local youth group. Presented by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Epsilon Iota Chapter and the Graduate Student Assembly.


Exhibition: Passion, Vision, and Voice: Students Honoring the Life and Legacy of Barbara Jordan

The MIC and the GSC cordially invite you to attend this year’s Open House. The Open House is part of the week-long celebration of the unveiling of the Barbara Jordan statue on campus. This collaborative event strives to build coalitions among historically underrepresented communities and inform students about the different services available at both centers. The Open House will begin with an interactive workshop with representatives from both centers. Then from 12 to 2 pm, the UT community will be able to speak with representatives from each center to learn more about the services they provide.

The Barbara Jordan statue will be the first female public figure honored on campus in its 125-year history. Diversity Education Initiatives and the Gender and Sexuality Center host the “James Baldwin: The Price of the Ticket” documentary film screening. Originally aired on PBS as part of the “American Masters” series, this biographical documentary of the late James Baldwin presents an in-depth look at his personal, artistic, and political life, shaped by his intersecting identities as an African-American gay man. Filmmaker Karen Thorsen combines archival interview footage of the outspoken Baldwin and contemporary interviews with his family and peers (including Maya Angelou, Ishmael Reed, and William Styron) to bring to life one of the most important American writers of the late 20th century. A discussion following the film will be facilitated by Michele Guzmán and Ixchel Rosa. This event is free and open to all. Pizza will be provided. The Women's Resource Agency is sponsoring a holiday wish list drive for SafePlace. "SafePlace exists to end sexual and domestic violence through safety, healing, prevention and social change." SafePlace provides housing for many people. Please donate the following: All sizes diapers, All sizes pull ups, Razors, Shaving Cream, Shampoo and Conditioner (unopened and full-sized), Baby hygiene items (powder, shampoo, wipes, etc.), Tampons, Deodorant, Baby food, Infant formula, Tuna, Canned veggies, Canned fruit, Canned beans, Canned soup, Boxed meals (mac and cheese, hamburger-helper type items, etc), Sugar, Flour, Cereal, Rice, Dried Beans, Top ramen, Condensed milk, Spaghetti, Spaghetti Sauce, Tomato sauce. December 8: Orange Santa Program Ends

Orange Santa began in 1994 as a program designed to foster a more caring campus environment by providing help for members of the university community who have special needs during the holiday season. In December 2007, Orange Santa served 500 families, including 1,700 children. All donated toys or gifts should be new, unwrapped and in the original packing. Wrapping paper, gift bags, ribbons and gift cards are needed to wrap and label gifts once shoppers have made their selections. Although grocery store gift certificates are welcome, we ask that no food items be contributed. Donations will be collected at UT guard stations on the main campus and at the Pickle Research Campus. In addition, there are numerous locations where gift items will be collected. Please check the Orange Santa website for a listing of Campus Collection Stations for the site nearest you. Forty years ago, the Kerner Commission said the causes of race riots in 150 American cities were unemployment, poverty and discrimination against black Americans. Fred Harris, a member of the original Kerner Commission, discusses what transpired then, and we discuss what has changed since then.
