Dr. M. Christopher Brown II, executive vice president and provost at Fisk University, and Dr. Roderick L. Smothers, vice president for institutional advancement at Langston University, recently spoke at a DDCE lecture series event about historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). They reminded us of the unique role HBCUs have played in the higher education landscape for more than 150 years. As President Obama observed when he signed an executive initiative in February to strengthen HBCUs, “They are the campuses where a people were educated, where a middle class was built, where a dream took hold.” Read more.

VSLC Launches Service Scholars Program

This fall the Volunteer and Service Learning Center (VSLC) is launching the UT Service Scholars program, a new initiative to support the next generation of community leaders. Each autumn, students with a passion for community service can apply to the program, which then connects them with opportunities in the community ranging from one-time volunteer events to year-long internships. The program also provides the scholars with student mentors as well as professional development resources to enrich their experience here at UT. Read more.

Local Walmart Store Supports UT Elementary School

Thanks to a recent donation from the Walmart Supercenter Store #3569 at the Parmer and I-35 intersection, teachers at UT Elementary School will spend less of their own money for classroom materials this year. Read more.

Intellectual Entrepreneurship Partners in Mentoring and College Prep Program with Media Communications Council and Texas Diversity Council

The Austin Housing Authority has funded a new intensive mentoring and college readiness project called It Could Be U that is a collaboration between Intellectual Entrepreneurship Consortium, a program within the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at The University of Texas at Austin; the Media Communications Council; and its parent organization, the Texas Diversity Council. GSC Sponsors National Young Women’s Day of Action on Campus

Every year in late October, people all over the world celebrate National Young Women’s Day of Action, an occasion that honors and encourages the political activism of young women around the globe. At The University of Texas at Austin, the Women’s Programming Alliance, part of DDCE’s Gender and Sexuality Center, brought social justice advocate and UT alumna Rajasvini Bhansali back to campus to speak about the many acts of profound courage she’s witnessed through her work with women in India and South Africa. Dr. Maedgen Selected for Leadership Texas
Dr. Jennifer Maedgen, associate vice president and chief of staff in the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement and clinical associate professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, has been selected to participate in the 2011 Leadership Texas program. Read more.
 
GRA Tracy Arambula-Turner Recipient of Phi Kappa Phi Award
Tracy Arambula-Turner, a graduate research assistant in the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement, was presented with a Love of Learning Award worth $500 by The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. Arambula-Turner was among 80 members nationwide receiving the Phi Kappa Phi Love of Learning Award to help fund post-baccalaureate studies and career development. Read more.

GSC: Gender and Sexuality Center Promotes Successful Transition to UT Community
Established in 2004, the mission of the Gender and Sexuality Center (GSC) is to provide safe spaces for all members of the UT Austin community to explore, organize, and promote learning around issues of gender and sexuality. The center also facilitates a greater responsiveness to the needs of women and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) communities through education, outreach, and advocacy.
