Thanks to a recent donation from the Walmart Supercenter Store #3569 at the Parmer and I-35 intersection, teachers at UT Elementary School will spend less of their own money for classroom materials this year.
CEO Melissa Chavez was on hand to receive an $8,300 check from store Manager Allen Martindale at the Walmart grand re-opening on September 24. Since Martindale selected UT Elementary to be this store’s community involvement recipient, employees have attended school events, and the store has given generously to benefit the staff and students. This year’s contribution comes in the form of $100 gift cards, totaling $1,300, for UT Elementary teachers to purchase classroom materials, and $7,000 for the Little Longhorn 5K scheduled for May 2011.
Shift Manager John Baldwin says the sponsorship of UT Elementary is important. “Having teachers in my family, I know what it costs to buy supplies,” Baldwin said. “If we can donate whatever we can, like notebooks and other supplies, then we should, so that the teachers can spend more time focusing on the teaching of our future generations. I think it is a huge deal.”
UT Elementary is a research-based demonstration school in East Austin that serves about 265 children. It is part of the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at The University of Texas at Austin. For more information about the school, please visit www.utelementary.org.
