I am pleased to announce the release of our Impact Report 2010-2011. All of us here in the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement are excited about our work this past year and that enthusiasm is reflected in the new impact report. The DDCE is one of the most comprehensive units of its kind; it is an exemplar in higher education. The division fosters a campus climate that reflects the people, geography, history, and culture of the state while allowing students, faculty, and staff to achieve high levels of success. Martinez, Breithaupt Receive Associate Vice President Appointments

Dr. Octavio N. Martinez Jr., executive director of the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health and clinical professor in the School of Social Work, and Dr. Charles Breithaupt, executive director of the University Interscholastic League (UIL), have been appointed associate vice presidents for diversity and community engagement at The University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Gregory J. Vincent, vice president for diversity and community engagement, said, "Dr. Martinez and Dr. Breithaupt are remarkable leaders for two of the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement's largest units. We wanted to recognize their outstanding work within the division. Both are dedicated to the university's mission of service and have made innumerable contributions to the university's work with communities throughout the state and serving the people of Texas." Dr. Vincent to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award from PVILCA

Gregory J. Vincent, vice president for diversity and community engagement at The University of Texas at Austin, will receive an honorary Prairie View Interscholastic League Coaches Association (PVILCA) Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding work in helping to preserve the history of the organization and its members. Students initiated and boycotted first Heman Sweatt Symposium

On Thursday, Feb. 24, Dr. George C. Wright, Prairie View A&M University president, and Dr. Edwin R. Sharpe, clinical professor in the Department of Educational Administration at The University of Texas at Austin, discussed their roles in establishing the Heman Sweatt Symposium on Civil Rights at The University of Texas at Austin. EVENT SPOTLIGHT
Students Institute for the Gifted Now Accepting Applications

The Summer Institute for the Gifted (SIG) sponsored by the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement is now accepting applications for its 2011 residential and day programs at The University of Texas at Austin. Programs will be offered for students ages 6 to 17. SIG programs have provided a unique curriculum for gifted children for more than 26 years, a connection with peers, and a safe and secure learning environment. Read more.

Hogg Foundation Gives Dissertation Awards to Two UT Austin Grad Students

Two doctoral students at The University of Texas at Austin have received awards from the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health to assist in their academic research.

Tierney Ahrold Lorenz of Austin and Katherine Sanchez of Dallas each received the Francis Fowler Wallace Memorial Dissertation Award, which awards up to $1,500 to students conducting dissertation research related to mental health. Read more.

The University of Texas Elementary School’s (UTES) wellness program called the Healthy Families Initiative (HFI) is not only transforming the lives of its own students, it’s also helping school districts outside of Texas improve their own student health and fitness levels. Read more.

Announcing the 2010 DDCE Impact Report
Vice President Gregory J. Vincent is pleased to announce the release of the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement (DDCE) Impact Report 2010-2011. The report reflects the division’s efforts to 1) create and support a climate of inclusiveness and of intellectual and cultural diversity at The University of Texas at Austin; and 2) share the university’s intellectual resources with communities statewide to solve challenging problems.
