One of the most important events of the year at The University of Texas at Austin is Explore UT – a day-long celebration during which we open the doors of our campus to the state. And on March 1, 2014, we once again welcome you to explore one of America’s great teaching and research universities.

One of my favorite moments of the day is when buses, filled with Texas school children, arrive on the campus. Their excitement is contagious, and it allows those of us who have been here a while to see this amazing place through new eyes.

We like to say “What starts here changes the world.” And for thousands of families, school children, and Texas citizens, a life-long relationship with this university will start at Explore UT. The University belongs to all of Texas, so come see it for yourself and be a Longhorn for a day.

This year marks the 15th anniversary of Explore UT: The Biggest Open House in Texas! For those unfamiliar with the program, Explore UT features close to 400 programs across campus including performances, exhibits, lectures and activities for the entire family. Those who are familiar with Explore UT know it can be a day of fun and learning, and for those of us who serve as hosts, we hope Explore UT will give you a glimpse of university life—the creative pulse of learning and discovery found in our classrooms, laboratories, studios and performance halls, and the world-class collections in our many museums and libraries.

There is something for everyone at Explore UT. While there are fun and engaging activities for children, middle school students can begin to contemplate college life by exploring favorite subjects and discovering career opportunities. High school students can meet with admissions counselors, advisers, faculty and current students to learn about everything from degree plans and financial aid to student organizations and the details of residence hall life. Parents and teachers can enjoy a variety of cultural events, lectures, performances and exhibits, while alumni can reconnect with their special corner of campus and share it with family and friends.

As an institution of higher education, the university’s mission is to educate young people, to create future leaders for the benefit of society. As a public university, The University of Texas at Austin is a common resource to be shared by all. At the Biggest Open House in Texas, our doors are open to you, so come to campus and learn something new, enjoy a day of fun, experience the vibrancy of college life, revisit someplace familiar, and Explore UT.

The University of Texas at Austin is an exciting place. As you Explore UT, allow your imagination to be expanded by everything UT can show you. Dream big and ask lots of questions. UT has so much to offer you, and so many opportunities you probably did not think were possible.

Just like you, all of the students at UT made an exploration of UT at some point, too. We are now part of this diverse and caring community, and it is our turn to share our favorite corners of the university with you. Many of the smiling faces you will see on March 1st are UT students who are volunteering in the information booths, riding the shuttle, making presentations, helping in the labs and demonstrating their incredible passion for learning and The University of Texas at Austin.

I hope you will attend Explore UT and discover what all of us on campus have come to cherish: the incredible spirit of Texas, the spirit of limitless possibility.

Welcome to The University of Texas at Austin and Hook 'em Horns!
