Ali's research focuses on the intersections of Islamic art, politics and religion. He is the recipient of three Fulbright awards to conduct manuscript research in Spain, Germany, Morocco and Egypt. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on Arabic literature and Islamic culture and has spoken to church groups, the media, and state and federal policy makers on Arabic-Islamic art, culture and politics.
