The Facilities Services Department has been developing strategies to serve our clients while reducing our annual operating expenditures by 6%, providing a mandatory 2% merit increase for staff, and realigning our services with the university mission. We are making numerous adjustments to staffing and operations on both the Main Campus and the J. J. Pickle Research Campus to achieve these reductions, which will affect our services to both campuses. These reductions may also affect clients’ costs in the future.
Following are highlights of the impacts.
Painting. Maintenance painting has been eliminated. Aesthetic painting will be deferred, and Zone Shops will no longer handle institutional (maintenance) painting. Departments may elect to fund their own maintenance painting projects; however, they must go through their Zone Shop for any self funded project. The Zone Shop is available to assist them with their project such as hiring a contractor or coordinating with the Paint Shop. Departments may request Renovation & Renewal (R&R) funding, with suitable justification. Zone Shops will continue to provide patch and paint services where feasible.
Mechanical equipment and predictive maintenance. In order to gain efficiencies in operation, the Preventive Maintenance Shop has been merged into the four Zone Shops, and personnel from the Preventive Maintenance Shop have been reassigned to the Zone Shops. Zone Shops will be responsible for mechanical equipment maintenance from basement to roof. Clients may notice some delay in preventive maintenance as Zone Shop employees learn those maintenance routines. A Predictive Maintenance Shop has been formed to conduct critical electrical checks, among other tasks, to improve building safety.
Once-a-month office cleaning will be phased in, and day cleaning crews will be consolidated among some buildings. Occupants may take their trash and recycling to a central bin within their building, or set receptacles outside their office door between monthly service schedules. Toilet seat covers and feminine sanitary products will no longer be provided once the current stock runs out.
Event & Moving Services (EMS). Event and Moving Services has been resized to better match the workload on campus. Clients may experience some delays in delivery and set-up services.
Furniture Restoration. The Furniture Restoration Shop has been resized to better match the workload on campus. There may be some delays in completing specialty work requests.
Landscape Services. Trimming and edging schedules have been reduced to once every three weeks rather than immediately after mowing. Some delays may occur in response to irrigation problems.
J. J. Pickle Research Campus (PRC) Facilities Services
Cleaning services. Once-a-month office cleaning will be phased in. Classrooms, conference rooms, and labs, will be cleaned weekly instead of daily. Carpet shampooing, floor stripping and waxing, and exterior window washing will be done on request.
Painting. Maintenance painting has been eliminated. Aesthetic painting will be deferred, and the PRC Paint Shop will no longer handle maintenance painting. Departments may elect to fund their own maintenance painting projects. Departments may request Renovation & Renewal (R&R) funding, with suitable justification. The PRC Paint Shop will continue to provide patch and paint services where feasible.
We continue to value our clients and will do all that we can to provide the best possible service during these difficult economic times. We appreciate your patience as we continue to implement cost-saving and efficiency measures this fall.
