Facilities Services manages its vehicle fleet to conserve fuel, thereby reducing costs and promoting cleaner air. The department's efforts support the university's Natural Resource Conservation Plan goal for campus fleet: "By August 31, 2020, UT Austin will reduce overall gasoline and diesel fuel consumption for the campus vehicle fleet by 20%, while shifting 50% of the campus vehicle fleet to 50% E85 gasoline and other alternative fuels."
Since 2008, Facilities Services has:
- Increased our fleet size of electric industrial carts from 82 to 131. During this time, we have replaced more than 22 gasoline powered vehicles such as pickup trucks and cargo vans with energy efficient electric industrial carts, saving thousands of gallons of fossil fuel.
- Purchased two hybrid-electric vehicles to reduce fossil fuel use and support clean air initiatives.
- Purchased only E85 (ethanol) powered vehicles when vehicles powered by fossil fuel were necessary. More than 32% of our fuel usage has been E85, replacing more than 25,000 gallons of fossil fuel with clean burning E85.
