Sustaining by Recycling
Facilities Services recycles materials, equipment, and other resources in its own operations and across the campus community.
- In FY 2007-2008, Facilities Services' recycling program recycled almost 3 million pounds of paper—the equivalent of roughly 25,000 trees..
- Our recycling program was recognized in 2007 with the Recyclemania Waste Minimization Award for lowest waste per capita among almost 200 competing colleges and universities.
- The recycling program also supports student volunteers from the Campus Environmental Center in recycling aluminum and plastic by providing bins and transportation.
- Surplus Property works to free valuable space and eliminate depreciation of unused items. The Surplus Property operation is the largest contributor to the Texas Department of Corrections computer rehabilitation program in which computers are refurbished by inmates, then donated to public schools.
- Automotive Services recycles batteries, auto glass, tires, and antifreeze.
- Landscape Services composts leaves and other green materials to mix with soil for planting. This practice of “recycling” plant material also reduces the need for watering and fertilizing.
