CREATION OF AN HONORS PROGRAM IN JEWISH STUDIES IN THE COLLEGE
OF LIBERAL ARTS CHAPTER OF THE UNDERGRADUATE CATALOG, 1998-2000,
OF THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN

Richard Lariviere, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, filed with the Secretary of the Faculty Council the proposal below to create an honors program in Jewish studies in the College of Liberal Arts chapter of The University of Texas at Austin Undergraduate Catalog, 1998-2000. The proposal was approved by the faculty of the College of Liberal Arts and by the dean on October 8, 1999. The proposal was received from the College of Liberal Arts on October 12, 1999, and the edited proposal was received from the Office of Official Publications on November 4, 1999. The Secretary has classified this proposal as legislation of exclusive application and primary interest to a single college or school.

If no objection is filed with the Office of the General Faculty within five working days of the date of circularization, the legislation will be held to have been approved by the Faculty Council. If objection is filed within the prescribed period, the legislation will be presented to the Faculty Council at its next meeting. The objection, with reasons, must be signed by a member of the Faculty Council.

To be counted, a protest must be received in the Office of the General Faculty by November 22, 1999.

On page 243, in the College of Liberal Arts chapter of The Undergraduate Catalog, 1998-2000, in the HONORS section, under ACADEMIC POLICIES AND PROCEDURES, add the following new honors program:

Jewish Studies Honors Program

Majors who wish to qualify for special honors in Jewish studies should apply to the honors adviser for admission to the honors program at least two semesters before they expect to graduate. A University grade point average of at least 3.00 is required for admission to the honors program. The requirements for graduation with special honors, which are in addition to the requirements for the major, are (1) a grade of A in Jewish Studies 375, Senior Seminar; (2) Jewish Studies 379H, Honors Tutorial Course, with a grade of A; (3) a University grade point average of at least 3.00 and a grade point average in Jewish studies of at least 3.50; and (4) completion at the University of at least sixty semester hours of coursework counted toward the degree.

Rationale:	To provide an honors program for the new degree program in Jewish studies.
Funding:	No additional funding is required for this new honors program.
