Richard Lariviere, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, filed with the Secretary of the Faculty Council theproposal below to create an honors program in Mexican American studies in the College of Liberal Arts chapter of The University of Texas at Austin Undergraduate Catalog, 1998-2000. The proposal was approved by the faculty of the College of Liberal Arts and by the dean on October 8, 1999. The proposal was received from the College of Liberal Arts on October 12, 1999, and the edited proposal was received from the Office of Official Publications on November 4, 1999. The Secretary has classified this proposal as legislation of exclusive application and primary interest to a single college or school.

If no objection is filed with the Office of the General Faculty within five working days of the date of circularization, the legislation will be held to have been approved by the Faculty Council. If objection is filed within the prescribed period, the legislation will be presented to the Faculty Council at its next meeting. The objection, with reasons, must be signed by a member of the Faculty Council.

To be counted, a protest must be received in the Office of the General Faculty by November 22, 1999.

On page 243, in the College of Liberal Arts chapter of The Undergraduate Catalog, 1998-2000, in the HONORS section, under DEPARTMENTAL HONORS PROGRAMS, below the Linguistics Honors Program, add the following new honors program:


Mexican American Studies Honors Program

Ethnic studies majors who wish to qualify for special honors in Mexican American studies should apply to the undergraduate adviser for admission to the honors program no later than two semesters before graduation. A University grade point average of at least 3.00 is required for admission.

Requirements for graduation with special honors in Mexican American Studies are (1) Mexican American Studies 372, with a grade of A; (2) Mexican American Studies 379H, Honors Tutorial Course, with a grade of at least B; (3) satisfactory performance on an oral presentation of honors paper research; (4) a University grade point average of at least 3.00 and a grade point average of at least 3.50 in the coursework required for the major in ethnic studies with a concentration in Mexican American studies; and (5) completion at the University of at least sixty semester hours of coursework counted toward the degree.

Rationale: To provide an honors program in Mexican American studies.

Funding: No additional funding is required for this new honors program.
