OF THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN

Insert on page 257 of The Undergraduate Catalog, 1998-2000, under the subsection entitled MAJORS AND MINORS of the BACHELOR OF ARTS, PLAN I degree section, after the section "Italian", the following new major:

Jewish Studies

Major:
Twenty-four semester hours of coursework in Jewish studies, consisting of Jewish Studies 302, 304, 375, and fifteen additional hours of upper-division coursework. Students are encouraged to use Hebrew or Yiddish to fulfill the foreign language requirement.

Minor for Jewish studies majors: Twelve semester hours, including at least six hours of upper-division coursework, in any one other field of study in the University. If the minor is in a foreign language other than that used to fulfill the Area A foreign language requirement, the twelve hours may be lower-division but must include at least six hours beyond course 507 or the equivalent.

Rationale: To accommodate increased interest in an undergraduate degree in Jewish studies.

Funding: No additional funding is required to implement this new degree, which replaces the current Concentration in Jewish studies.
