CHANGES IN THE MAJOR REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN PUBLIC RELATIONS IN THE COLLEGE OF COMMUNICATION CHAPTER OF THE UNDERGRADUATE CATALOG, 1998-2000


Ellen A. Wartella, Dean of the College of Communication, filed with the Secretary of the Faculty Council the proposal below to change the major requirements for the bachelor of science degree in public relations in the College of Communication chapter of The Undergraduate Catalog, 1998-2000. The faculty and the dean of the College of Communication have approved the changes. The edited proposal was received from the Office of Official Publications on February 29, 2000. The secretary has classified this proposal as legislation of exclusive application and primary interest to a single college or school.

If no objection is filed with the Office of the General Faculty by the date specified below, the legislation will be held to have been approved by the Faculty Council. If objection is filed within the prescribed period, the legislation will be presented to the Faculty Council at its next meeting. The objection, with reasons, must be signed by a member of the Faculty Council.

To be counted, a protest must be received in the Office of the General Faculty by April 12, 2000.

On page 75, in the College of Communication chapter of The Undergraduate Catalog, 1998-2000, in the section "BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN PUBLIC RELATIONS," subsection "MAJOR REQUIREMENTS," make the following changes in requirement two:

Twenty-one semester hours chosen from the following courses, including at least three hours in theory courses and three in skills courses. At least six of these hours must be in upper-division courses.

Theory courses: Advertising 318J, 319, 334, 335, Communication Studies 310K, 315M, 332K, 350K, Journalism 360, Radio-Television-Film 305, 309, 312C[, Speech 310K, 315M, 332K, 350K].

Skills courses: Advertising 348, Communication Studies 305 or 319, 331K, 332, Journalism [314, 324,] 327, 330, 336, 375, 376D, Public Relations 374, Radio-Television-Film 317, 318[, Speech 305 or 319, 331K, 332].



Rationale:
RTF 305 is an introductory theory course that widens the available selection for students. In addition, it is a prerequisite course for other radio-television-film courses approved for the major requirements.
