Richard W. Lariviere, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, filed with the Secretary of the Faculty Council the proposal below for changes in requirements for graduating with honors in Russian and Slavic studies in the College of Liberal Arts chapter of The Undergraduate Catalog, 1998-2000. The faculty and the dean of the College of Liberal Arts approved the changes on November 22, 1999. The edited proposal was received from the Office of Official Publications on February 17, 2000. The secretary has classified this proposal as legislation of exclusive application and primary interest to a single college or school.

If no objection is filed with the Office of the General Faculty by the date specified below, the legislation will be held to have been approved by the Faculty Council. If objection is filed within the prescribed period, the legislation will be presented to the Faculty Council at its next meeting. The objection, with reasons, must be signed by a member of the Faculty Council.

To be counted, a protest must be received in the Office of the General Faculty by April 7, 2000.

On page 245, in the College of Liberal Arts chapter of The Undergraduate Catalog, 1998-2000, in the section "ACADEMIC POLICIES AND PROCEDURES," subsection "DEPARTMENTAL HONORS PROGRAMS," make the following changes.


[Slavic Languages and Literatures Honors Program³]

Russian and Slavic Studies Honors Program

Majors who are candidates for special honors in Russian and Slavic studies [or special honors in Czech] should apply to the honors adviser for admission to the honors program [during the first semester of their third year; they must apply no later than the beginning of their fourth year.] no later than two semesters before graduation. A University grade point average of at least 3.00 and a grade point average in Russian [or Czech] and Slavic of at least 3.50 are required for admission. The requirements for graduation with special honors are (1) Russian 679H[A or Czech 679HA], Honors Tutorial Course [(reading for comprehensive honors examination)], with a grade of at least B [in the honors examination at the end of the course; (2) Russian 679HB or Czech 679HB, Honors Tutorial Course (honors paper), in which] in each half, and completion of an honors paper judged "Acceptable for Honors in Russian and Slavic studies" [or Czech" is presented]; [(3)] (2) a University grade point average of at least 3.00 and a grade point average in Russian and Slavic [or Czech] of at least 3.50; and [(4)] (3) completion at the University of at least sixty semester hours of coursework counted toward the degree.

Rationale:
To separate for reasons of clarification the honors program in Russian and Slavic studies from the honors program in Czech, and to bring the language of the honors program more into line with other honors programs in the College.
