IN MEMORIAM
MADELEINE DERDEYN-JOSEPH
Madeleine Derdeyn-Joseph, retired associate
professor of French and Italian, died on February 27, 1998.
Professor Derdeyn-Joseph was born in
Roulers, Belgium. Available records show both May 31, 1900, and May
31, 1905, for her date of birth. She received a bachelor's degree from
the University of Oklahoma in 1927 and a master's degree from Syracuse
University in 1928.
Professor Derdeyn-Joseph taught at Winthrop
College for Women and the University of Puerto Rico prior to joining
The University of Texas at Austin in 1944. She taught until 1974, when
she retired. She was a member of the American Association of Teachers
of French and the South Central Association of Language Teachers. She
was recognized for her service to the University at the convocation
of the College of Liberal Arts in 1994.
In 1992, Professor Derdeyn-Joseph participated
in the "Walk Across Texas" contest for individuals over 70 and came
in second, behind a 72-year-old contestant.
