IN MEMORIAM
CHESTER F. LAY
Chester F. Lay, retired professor of
accounting and management, died in October 1979. He was 84.
Professor Lay was born on February 8,
1895, in Ozark, Illinois. He received a bachelor's degree from Southern
Illinois Normal University in 1917 and master's and doctoral degrees
from the University of Chicago in 1923 and 1931, respectively.
Professor Lay taught at the University
of Arizona and Oregon State College. He joined the faculty of The University
of Texas at Austin in 1925. He specialized in managerial uses of accounting,
and personnel administration. He taught at UT Austin until 1944, when
he resigned to accept the presidency of Southern Illinois Normal University.
He returned to teaching when he accepted a position at Southern Methodist
University in 1948, where he taught until 1950.
Professor Lay was a member of the American
Accounting Association, the American Economic Association, and the American
Management Association.
