IN MEMORIAM
CALVIN MCMILLAN
Calvin McMillan, professor emeritus
of botany, died on August 29, 1997. He was 75.
Professor McMillan was born on February
20, 1922, in Murray, Utah. He received bachelor's and master's degrees
from the University of Utah in 1947 and 1948, respectively. He earned
a PhD from the University of California at Berkeley in 1952.
Dr. McMillan taught at the University
of Nebraska before joining the faculty of The University of Texas at
Austin in 1958. He carried out highly regarded research in plant ecology,
including a now-classic work on prairie grass populations. He also conducted
studies of marine grasses along the world's shallow coastal waters.
Professor McMillan's work was supported by grants from the National
Science Foundation.
Professor McMillan was a member of the
Ecological Society of America, the American Society for Plant Taxonomists,
and the Botanical Society of America.
