M. IRVING SMITH
M. Irving Smith, professor emeritus
of Slavic languages, died on June 27, 1989. He was 89.
Professor Smith was born on July 27,
1899, in Cashion, Oklahoma. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees
from the University of Oklahoma in 1921 and 1925, respectively. He taught
at Southwest Texas State University from 1923 to 1926. He joined the
faculty of The University of Texas at Austin in 1927, where he taught
until his retirement in 1969.
Professor Smith initially taught Spanish
and French. He later specialized in teaching Russian. He also served
as a translator of Russian language materials for use by UT Austin faculty
