IN MEMORIAM
JO ANN SWEENEY
Jo Ann Sweeney, professor of curriculum
and instruction, died on December 18, 1996. She was 57. A memorial service
was held at the George I. Sanchez Education Building on the campus.
Professor Sweeney was born on May 27,
1939, in North Star, Michigan. She earned bachelor's, master's, and
doctoral degrees from the University of Michigan in 1966, 1968, and
1970, respectively.
Dr. Sweeney joined the faculty of The
University of Texas at Austin in 1970. She chaired the Department of
Curriculum and Instruction from 1990 o her death. She specialized in
social studies and economic education. She was the department's liaison
with the Texas Education Agency and the Austin Independent School District.
She also worked with the Texas Center for Reading and Language Arts.
Professor Sweeney was a member of the
Atlantic Economic Society, the National Council on Economic Education,
and the National Council for Social Studies. She received the M. A.
Welch Award for excellence in economic education.
