DON C. TRAVIS JR.
Don C. Travis Jr., associate professor emeritus
of Germanic studies, died on March 1, 1996. He was 84.
Professor Travis was born on December 13, 1911,
in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He earned a bachelor s degree from Princeton
University in 1936 and master s and doctoral degrees from the
University of Wisconsin in 1937 and 1959, respectively.
Dr. Travis was in government service from 1942
to 1954. He joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin
in 1954 and taught until 1983, when he retired. He specialized
in eighteenth and nineteenth century German artistic and cultural
history. He also carried out research on the cultural and political
background of Nazism.
Professor Travis served as editor of A Hegel
Symposium (1962). He published essays in Die Unterrichtspraxis,
Ein Reader zu Person und Werk, and Studies in Literature
and Language<. Professor Travis also translated the work of
Rainer Maria Rilke for Modern European Poetry (1966) and
the work of Uwe Brandner, Günter Herburger, and Oskar Sandner
for Dimension (1968, 1975).
