On November 14, 2000, President Faulkner appointed the following committee to prepare a memorial resolution for Robert Henry Wilson, professor emeritus, English: James Wimsatt (chair), James D. Garrison, and Thomas M. Cable.

On November 29, 2000, President Faulkner appointed the following committee to prepare a memorial resolution for Marian B. Davis, professor emeritus, art and art history: Jeffrey C. Smith (chair), Nancy Schuller, and McDonald Smith.

On December 7, 2000, President Faulkner appointed the following committee to prepare a memorial resolution for Charles Hartshorne, professor emeritus, philosophy: Grayson D. Browning (chair), Stephen H. Phillips, and Robert H. Kane.

On December 7, 2000, President Faulkner appointed the following committee to prepare a memorial resolution for Svatava P. Jakobson, professor emeritus, Slavic languages: Sidney Monas (chair), Hana Pichova, and John S. Kolsti.

On December 21, 2000, President Faulkner appointed the following committee to prepare a memorial resolution for William C. Gardiner Jr., professor, chemistry and biochemistry: Alan Campion (chair), Stephen E. Webber, and John F. Stanton.1

On January 10, 2001, President Faulkner appointed the following committee to prepare a memorial resolution for Bill D. Francis, professor emeritus, art and art history: Jay Ulbricht (chair), Rebecca Brooks, and Lee Chesney.

  president on January 26, 1999. Receipt acknowledged by the president on February 5, 1999, with these comments: "I am sympathetic to the concepts underlying the resolution. It is being forwarded to Provost Ekland-Olson for review and to determine how these proposals might be implemented within University policy." Comment from the provost on November 10, 2000: "To implement this resolution, a proposed Policy on Teaching Continuity and Restructured Faculty Workload Upon the Birth or Adoption of a Child has been sent to the Executive Committee of the Faculty Council for its consideration." The proposed Policy on Teaching Continuity and Restructured Faculty Workload Upon the Birth or Adoption of a Child (D 938-940) was presented to the Faculty Council for discussion on November 20, 2000.

D 365-366 Mid-Probationary Review Policy (Amended). Posted on the Faculty Council web site on March 8, 2000. Amended and then approved by Faculty Council by voice vote on March 20, 2000 (see D 328-329). Transmitted to the president on March 21, 2000. Comment by the provost on November 10, 2000: "The Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost has studied the existing mid-probationary review policies at UT Austin. Most colleges are in compliance with the proposed legislation. For those that are not in compliance, this office will work with them to adopt policies in accord with current best practices."

D&P 16517-16519 Recommendation for a Change in Regents' Rules Concerning Suspension of a Faculty Member with Pay. Approved by the Faculty Council at its meeting on December 8, 1997, and transmitted to the president on December 9, 1997. Transmitted to the chancellor by the president on January 20, 1999, with these comments: "This legislation was discussed among my office, the Office of the Provost, and members of the Faculty Council Executive Committee. It puts into the Regents' Rules what has been the practice at The University of Texas at Austin. Confidential consultation with a faculty committee regarding a possible suspension is guaranteed, but the final determination is made by the president. This process has worked well on our campus. I recommend your favorable consideration of the proposed change."

D&P 17040-17043 Proposal from the Faculty Grievance Committee to Create an Office of the Faculty Ombudsperson. Posted on the Faculty Council web site on March 15, 1999. Introduced by Janet Staiger at the Faculty Council meeting on April 19, 1999. Approved by Faculty Council on May 10, 1999. Transmitted to the president on May 12, 1999. Comment from the provost on November 10, 2000: "By separate letter, this legislation will be returned without approval. Rather than create an Office of the Faculty Ombudsperson, a proposal is under consideration to use faculty-trained mediators to

  assist the Faculty Grievance Committee with its work. These mediators would work with Linda Millstone and the staff in the Equal Employment Opportunity Office."

D 77-81 Changes in Policies Concerning Grades Awarded with Credit by Examination. Posted on the Faculty Council web site on October 29, 1999. Approved by Faculty Council on November 15, 1999. Transmitted to the president on November 16, 1999. Comment by the provost on November 10, 2000: "The Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost continues to explore various options. A final decision has not yet been reached."
